HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

UCAT Requirements

All applicants to Birmingham Dentistry must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. The UCAT score is used alongside academic achievement to determine which applicants are invited to interview.

Aspect Detail
Admissions Test UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test)
Cut-off Score Not published. Birmingham does not publish a UCAT cut-off for Dentistry — UCAT is used to rank applicants, not to filter them out. Stop looking for a threshold; there isn't one.
Situational Judgement Test band Not used. The A200 selection process does not use the UCAT SJT band at any stage.
Interview threshold score Not published. Birmingham states it varies each year.
Application statistics (applicants per place) Not published for A200 on Birmingham's admissions pages.
How UCAT is Used Combined with academic performance for interview selection

"Birmingham is a competitive dental school with high academic requirements, especially at GCSE level. The requirement for grade 8 in Biology and Chemistry at GCSE is stricter than most schools. Make sure you check you meet all the criteria before applying, and prepare thoroughly for both the UCAT and MMI."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Note on UCAT scores: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores from previous years may not directly apply to the current format. The competitiveness levels described above are based on relative performance within the applicant pool.

Interview Process

Birmingham uses the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. Candidates rotate through several stations, each designed to assess different competencies required for a career in dentistry.

Special Applicant Categories

Do They Accept Resits?

No

Birmingham does not accept A-Level resits for their Dentistry programme. All required grades must be achieved in the first sitting.

Do They Accept Re-applicants?

Yes

Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. You should demonstrate how your application has improved and show continued commitment to dentistry.

International Students

Accepted

International students can apply to the BDS programme. We have up to 3 places available for students who are assessed as international for fee-paying purposes. International fees apply. Check the university website for current international fee information.

Widening Participation

Birmingham offers contextual admissions for students enrolled on recognised Widening Participation programmes, one grade below the standard offer. The contextual offer is AAB to include Chemistry and Biology.

For applicants on the Pathways to Birmingham programme, the offer is ABB to include Chemistry and Biology, with minimum predicted grades of BBB. See the full section below for how each route actually works.

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

They Might Apply To You If…

  • You have been in receipt of free school meals at any point during your secondary education
  • You have spent time in local authority care
  • The circumstance is declared and documented on your UCAS form — Birmingham will not apply a flag it cannot see
  • Or: you are studying at a Pathways to Birmingham partner school or college, with a nominated teacher supporting your application, and you complete the Routes to the Professions (R2P) programme
  • For the R2P dentistry strand you also need at least seven GCSEs including English Language, Maths, Chemistry and Biology (or Double Award Science) at grades 7755, and to be studying Biology, Chemistry and one other A-Level
  • R2P benefits require you to make Birmingham your UCAS firm choice

If you meet any of those conditions, the University of Birmingham may lower the grades it asks of you for the A200 BDS, and — on the Pathways route only — relax its GCSE requirements and guarantee you an interview.

What It Gets You

How it helps What that means for you
Lower academic bar at screening (contextual flag) At stage 1 of A200 screening, contextual applicants are checked against AAB rather than the standard AAA, before the personal statement and UCAT stages are applied. You are not filtered out at the first gate for being one grade short.
A second, lower offer (Pathways to Birmingham / R2P) Completers receive two offers: the standard AAA one and an alternative Pathways offer of ABB including Chemistry and Biology, with minimum predicted BBB. You hold the lower one.
Guaranteed interview (Pathways to Birmingham / R2P only) If you complete R2P and meet the academic criteria, your Dentistry interview is guaranteed — you are not competing for an interview slot on UCAT rank.
Relaxed GCSE profile (Pathways to Birmingham / R2P only) Seven GCSEs at grade 4+, with English Language, English Literature, Maths, Chemistry and Biology at 5+ and any two of those at 7+ — against Birmingham's standard A/7 in English and Maths and A*/8 in Biology and Chemistry. This is the single biggest relaxation Birmingham publishes for dentistry.
Mentoring and application support R2P participants get undergraduate mentors and structured support through the application. Useful, but it is the offer and the interview guarantee that move the needle.

What It Does Not Get You

  • UKWPMED does not cover dentistry. The UK Widening Participation in Medicine consortium route — automatic interview plus a reduced ABB offer across participating schools — applies to Medicine (A100) only. Dentistry is not an eligible course.
  • The free-school-meals / care contextual flag does not relax GCSEs. It moves the A-Level screening bar to AAB; Birmingham's demanding GCSE profile still applies in full. The GCSE relaxation is attached to the Pathways route instead.
  • The contextual flag alone does not guarantee an interview. Only Pathways to Birmingham / R2P carries an interview guarantee.
  • Pathways and UKWPMED benefits at Birmingham are conditional on making Birmingham your UCAS firm choice. If you firm elsewhere, the alternative offer does not travel with you.
  • There is no lower UCAT threshold to win, because Birmingham publishes no UCAT cut-off for Dentistry at all — UCAT is used to rank, not to filter. The A200 process also does not use the UCAT Situational Judgement Test band at any stage.
  • Birmingham publishes no interview threshold score, stating that it varies each year.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK / Republic of Ireland) £10,050
International — pre-clinical (Year 1) £30,180
International — clinical (Years 2–5) £53,880

Figures taken from Birmingham's own A200 course page for September 2027 entry, which states "£10,050 per year for domestic (UK) students for 2027/28". International dentistry fees at Birmingham are banded: the clinical years cost substantially more than the pre-clinical year. Confirm your own fee status with the university before you apply.

Course Structure

The BDS programme at Birmingham uses an integrated curriculum that combines scientific learning with clinical experience from early in the course:

Years 1-2: Foundation Phase

Core biomedical sciences integrated with early clinical skills. Students learn anatomy, physiology, and basic dental sciences while beginning to develop clinical skills in simulation labs.

Years 3-4: Clinical Development

Increased patient contact and clinical experience. Students treat patients under supervision at the Birmingham Dental Hospital, developing skills across all areas of dentistry.

Year 5: Clinical Practice

Extensive clinical practice preparing students for independent practice. Students manage their own patient lists and complete comprehensive treatments.

Birmingham Dentistry FAQ

Birmingham uses the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. You'll rotate through several stations, each assessing different competencies including communication, ethics, problem-solving, and motivation for dentistry.

Can I apply with resit grades?

No, Birmingham does not accept A-Level resits for their Dentistry programme. You must achieve the required grades (AAA including Biology and Chemistry) in your first sitting.

What GCSE grades do I need?

Birmingham has specific GCSE requirements: English Language or Literature at grade A/7 or higher, Mathematics at grade A/7 or higher, and Biology and Chemistry at grade A*/8 or higher. These requirements are stricter than many other dental schools.

Yes, graduates with a 2:1 in a health sciences related degree can apply, but you still need A-Levels in Biology and Chemistry plus one other subject at ABB or higher. If you achieve a First class degree, BBB may be considered.

How can I improve my chances of getting into Birmingham Dentistry?

Focus on three areas: achieve strong academics (meeting the specific GCSE and A-Level requirements), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT to score competitively, and gain meaningful work experience that you can reflect on at interview. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 15%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.
