HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

UCAT Requirements

All applicants to Bristol Dentistry must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. Bristol uses the UCAT as part of their selection process for interview invitations.

Aspect Detail
Admissions Test UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test)
How UCAT is Used Used for interview selection; contextual data NOT used when assessing UCAT
Situational Judgement Test Not used. Bristol states that the combined score from all subtests, with the exception of Situational Judgement, is used to select applicants for interview
UCAT Cut-Off No cut-off is published in advance. After the academic screen, applications are scored with a 100% weighting on the UCAT result
Threshold actually reached For 2026 entry, the final UCAT threshold to be invited to interview was 2340 for home applicants and 1970 for overseas applicants. Bristol states the threshold is subject to change year on year
Contextual UCAT threshold None on the standard BDS. The Gateway route's threshold was 1990 for 2026 entry

"Bristol will consider resit applicants, which makes it a realistic option for students who narrowly missed their grades. The catch is the small print: if you apply with your grades already in hand, Bristol will not consider you under any circumstances unless you already meet the published requirements in A-Level Chemistry, GCSE Maths and GCSE English. Combined with their contextual admissions scheme, Bristol genuinely tries to identify talented students from all backgrounds - but you must clear those three subjects."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Personal Statement

Bristol does not use the personal statement as a primary selection criterion. However, they may refer to it (along with the reference) to differentiate between applicants with similar academic profiles.

When used, Bristol looks for evidence of:

  • Work experience and motivation for dentistry
  • Understanding of the dental profession
  • Team work or non-academic achievements
  • Contribution to society

Note on UCAT scores: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores from previous years may not directly apply to the current format. The competitiveness levels described above are based on relative performance within the applicant pool.

Interview Process

Bristol assesses applicants using a formal online interview system. It is a structured interview rather than the MMI format used by many other dental schools.

Aspect Detail
Format Structured interview, delivered through a formal online interview system
Contextual Data Not used when assessing interview performance
Number of stations Not published. Bristol uses a structured interview rather than a station circuit and does not publish a station count
Interview window November to April following your application — you must be available throughout
Applications per place Not published. Bristol does not publish applicant or offer statistics for BDS Dentistry

Work Experience Requirements

  • Evidence of commitment to dentistry as a career
  • Understanding of what a career in dentistry involves
  • Experience in healthcare or caring environments is valued
  • Quality of reflection on experiences matters

Yes

Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. Demonstrate how your application has improved since your previous attempt.

International students can apply to the BDS programme. Check the university website for current international fee information and any specific requirements.

Widening Participation

Bristol offers significant contextual admissions support:

  • Contextually eligible applicants may receive offers two grades below standard entry (AAA reduced to ABB)
  • Contextual data is NOT used when assessing UCAT or interview performance - everyone is assessed equally at these stages
  • A separate six-year Gateway to Dentistry route (A208) exists with a far lower entry offer and UCAT threshold

Full eligibility criteria, the Gateway grade ceiling and what each adjustment is worth are set out in the Contextual & Widening Participation Offers section below.

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

They Might Apply To You If…

Bristol runs two separate things: a standard contextual offer on the five-year BDS, and a Gateway to Dentistry route with its own UCAS code. The eligibility lists overlap but are not the same, and the Gateway route has a grade ceiling that the contextual offer does not.

For the contextual offer on BDS Dentistry (A206)

You need home fee status, a UCAS application, and A-levels and/or the International Baccalaureate — plus at least one of:

  • You attend a state school or college on Bristol's published "aspiring schools" list for your region
  • Your home postcode is in the top 40% most deprived areas nationally (IMD quintile 1 or 2)
  • You have completed a named Bristol widening participation programme — Access to Bristol, Bristol Scholars, Discover Bristol, Insight into Bristol, Next Step Bristol or the Virtual Summer School
  • You have spent three months or more in local authority care
  • You were eligible for free school meals at any point during secondary education

For Gateway to Dentistry (A208)

  • Your home postcode is in the top 40% most deprived areas nationally (IMD quintile 1 or 2), or
  • You have spent three months or more in local authority care

If you meet any of the BDS criteria above, the University of Bristol will lower the grades it asks of you by two, from AAA to ABB. It will not lower the UCAT score you need to be invited to interview, and it does not get you an interview. If you meet a Gateway criterion instead, you are applying to a different, six-year course with a much lower entry bar.

What It Gets You

How it helps What that means for you
Lower A-level offer on the standard BDS ABB instead of AAA — an A in Chemistry and a B in one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics. A two-grade reduction.
Lower IB offer on the standard BDS 32 points with 16 at Higher Level (6 HL Chemistry, 5 HL in one of Biology, Physics or Maths) instead of 36 with 18 at HL.
A separate six-year route with its own UCAS code Gateway to Dentistry (A208) is a gateway year in anatomy, physiology, chemistry and numeracy with clinical placements, then automatic progression onto the five-year BDS on successful completion.
A much lower entry offer on the Gateway route BBC including B in Biology or Chemistry, against AAA for standard entry. BTEC DMM is also accepted.
Relaxed GCSE requirements on the Gateway route The GCSE Maths requirement falls from grade 7/A to grade 4/C. For a dentistry applicant who is strong in science but was never going to hit a 7 in Maths, this is often the clause that matters most.
A much lower UCAT threshold on the Gateway route For 2026 entry the Gateway interview threshold was 1990 against 2340 for standard BDS. Bristol states these thresholds move year on year, so treat them as scale, not as a target.
A guaranteed interview — but only in combination You must meet a Gateway criterion and have completed one of Bristol's named widening participation programmes. One without the other does not do it.

What It Does Not Get You

  • The Gateway routes publish a grade CEILING, not just a floor. Predicted or achieved A-levels of AAB or above, or an A in Chemistry, make you ineligible for Gateway to Dentistry. Strong predictions disqualify you from the widening-access route and push you back to the standard course.
  • Equivalent ceilings apply to other qualifications: BTEC DDD or above, IB 33 points including 16 at Higher Level or 6 HL Chemistry, and Scottish Advanced Higher AA or an A in Chemistry.
  • Meeting a Gateway criterion alone does not guarantee an interview. The guarantee also requires completion of one of Bristol's named, academically focused widening participation programmes.
  • The standard contextual offer is restricted to applicants studying A-levels and/or the IB. Other Level 3 qualifications are not listed as eligible for it.
  • The contextual offer does not lower the UCAT threshold used to select for interview on the standard BDS, and contextual data is not used when assessing UCAT or interview performance.

For a side-by-side comparison, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK) students £10,050 for the first year
International students £51,600 for the first year

Both figures are Bristol's own published fees for 2027 entry to BDS Dentistry (A206). Bristol states fees are reviewed annually and are liable to rise each year: home fees in line with UK government policy, international fees in line with expected inflation. Gateway to Dentistry (A208) is published at the same £10,050 home rate for the first year. Verified on Bristol's 2027-entry course pages, October 2026.

Course Structure

The BDS programme at Bristol uses an integrated curriculum that combines scientific learning with clinical experience from early in the course:

Years 1-2: Foundation Phase

Core biomedical sciences integrated with early clinical skills. Students learn anatomy, physiology, and basic dental sciences while beginning to develop clinical skills in simulation environments.

Years 3-4: Clinical Development

Increased patient contact and clinical experience. Students treat patients under supervision, developing skills across all areas of dentistry including restorative dentistry, oral surgery, and periodontics.

Year 5: Clinical Practice

Extensive clinical practice preparing students for independent practice. Students manage their own patient lists and complete comprehensive treatments, ready for their career as a dentist.

How to Strengthen Your Application

Bristol Dentistry FAQ

Does Bristol accept resits for Dentistry?

However, if you apply with your grades already achieved, Bristol will not consider you under any circumstances if you do not meet the published entry requirements in A-Level Chemistry, GCSE Mathematics or GCSE English.

What UCAT score do I need for Bristol Dentistry?

Bristol states there is no cut-off score for the UCAT. Contextual data is not applied when assessing UCAT scores - all applicants are assessed equally.

Does Bristol use MMI interviews?

No, Bristol uses a structured interview format rather than MMIs, and assessment is carried out through a formal online interview system. This differs from many other dental schools, so prepare specifically for this format.

What are the contextual offers at Bristol?

Contextually eligible applicants may receive offers two grades below the standard requirement (AAA reduced to ABB). However, contextual data is not used when assessing UCAT or interview performance.

Can I apply with a BTEC?

Yes, Bristol accepts BTEC qualifications. You need DDD in Applied Science BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma with Distinctions in five specified Chemistry units.

Does Bristol consider the personal statement?

Bristol does not use the personal statement as a primary selection criterion. However, they may refer to it to differentiate between applicants with similar academic profiles, looking for evidence of work experience, motivation, and contribution to society.
