HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

UCAT Requirements (A100)

All applicants to the 5-year programme must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. City St George's applies a minimum section score and a separate overall cut-off that it recalculates every year from the scores it actually receives.

Aspect Detail
Section Score Minimum 500 in each individual section
Overall Cut-off Score Set each year. "Each applicant that meets our entry criteria is ranked by their UCAT score. Interview places will be allocated to applicants who have the highest UCAT scores, until all of our available interview places are filled."
SJT Consideration For 2027 entry, City St George's states it "will be considering the 'Situational Judgement' SJT Banding scores in our decision making"
Extenuating Circumstances "We will not consider any extenuating circumstances in relation to UCAT test scores."
Submitting Your Score No need to put it on UCAS — scores come directly from Pearson and UCAS. Register for the UCAT under exactly the name on your UCAS form.

Published Historic UCAT Cut-offs (A100)

City St George's publishes its overall cut-offs after each cycle on its own admissions statistics page. Clearing scores, where different, are in brackets. Note the scale change: Abstract Reasoning was removed from the UCAT in 2025, dropping the maximum total from 3,600 to 2,700, which is why the 2026 figures look so different.

Cycle Non-graduates (Home) Non-graduates (Overseas) Graduates (Home) Graduates (Overseas)
2022 2710 2710 2810 2810
2023 2630 2630 2690 2690
2024 2690 2700 2690 2700
2025 2600 (2550) 2750 (2550) 2600 (2550) 2770 (2550)
2026 1880 1640 1880 1630

City St George's own warning is worth repeating: "It is not possible to predict what the UCAT thresholds will be in any individual year, nor to use data from previous years to predict subsequent years' thresholds."

"City St George's is one of the more accessible London medical schools in terms of entry requirements, but don't let that fool you, it's still competitive. The key advantage is their holistic approach. If your UCAT isn't exceptional, a strong academic profile and genuine commitment to medicine can still get you an interview. It's a great choice for students who want excellent clinical training without the AAB academic pressure of some other London schools."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Selection Process

  • Stage 1: Academic qualifications screening (predicted/achieved grades)
  • Stage 2: UCAT score assessment combined with academics
  • Stage 3: Contextual data considered for widening participation applicants
  • Stage 4: MMI for shortlisted candidates

Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.

Work Experience Requirements

City St George's expects applicants to have gained experience that demonstrates their understanding of healthcare and commitment to medicine. While there is no strict minimum hours requirement, they look for:

  • Evidence of sustained commitment to healthcare (e.g., regular volunteering)
  • Exposure to clinical environments where possible (hospital, GP surgery, hospice)
  • Caring experience in any capacity (care homes, community volunteering)
  • Reflection on what you learned and how it confirmed your motivation

The school recognises that clinical experience may have been difficult to obtain due to COVID-19 or personal circumstances. Alternative evidence of commitment to caring for others is accepted.

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

They Might Apply To You If…

To be eligible for a City St George's contextual offer you must be a Home-fee paying student applying for the first year of an undergraduate degree through UCAS, and meet one or more of:

  • You have spent three months or more in local authority care (declare this on your UCAS form — the information is taken from there)
  • Your postcode is in POLAR4 quintile 1 or 2 — an area with low progression to higher education
  • You attended a lower-performing school or college: one in the lowest 20% for average points per A-level student (or equivalent) in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, as identified by the Department for Education via UCAS
  • You are the first generation in your family to go to university
  • You are an estranged student — aged 25 or under, studying without the support and approval of either parent because the relationship has broken down
  • You have caring responsibilities — unpaid care for a family member, partner or friend who could not cope without you
  • You have been in receipt of Free School Meals

If you meet any of those conditions, City St George's may lower the grades it asks of you — by one grade for a single criterion, and by up to two grades if you meet more than one.

What It Gets You

How it helps What that means for you
A reduced grade offer — one criterion One A-level grade (or one BTEC grade, or up to 16 tariff points depending on the qualification). Against the standard AAA for the five-year MBBS, that is AAB.
A reduced grade offer — two or more criteria Up to two A-level grades (16 tariff points). An applicant taking a BTEC Extended Diploma with two contextual factors gets one BTEC grade, because a BTEC grade is worth 16 tariff points on its own.
Care experience is treated separately "Applicants who have been In Care are always given a reduced offer of two A level points or 16 tariff points" — you do not need a second criterion to get the full reduction.
International Baccalaureate applicants A reduction of up to two points from the overall total, rather than a tariff adjustment.
Applied automatically The reduction is usually applied automatically from your UCAS form, though City St George's may verify some information with you directly. Your offer letter will say it is contextual.
Pre-application support Widening participation applicants can access travel bursaries to attend open days at the Tooting campus and invitations to widening participation activities. This is outreach support, not an admissions advantage.

What It Does Not Get You

  • No lower UCAT threshold. City St George's publishes one overall cut-off per applicant category per year and ranks everyone who meets the entry criteria by UCAT score. Nothing in its published contextual policy lowers that bar for contextual applicants.
  • No guaranteed interview. Interview places go to the highest UCAT scores until they run out.
  • Contextual offers apply only to Home-fee paying applicants holding A levels, BTEC, CTEC, LIBF/IFS, WJEC Diploma or the IB. They are not applied to any other qualification.
  • No grade adjustment for part-time study or for applicants who enter through Clearing.
  • Foundation courses are excluded from the scheme.

Every school does this differently, and the differences are worth knowing before you build your shortlist — see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK) £10,050
International £47,380

Both figures are published by City St George's on the Medicine MBBS course page under "Fees for year 2027 / 28". The university adds: "Our undergraduate fees are set in line with the maximum permitted by the UK Government and may increase in subsequent years in line with government policy." Fee waivers are available for this course, and you may be eligible for NHS Bursary support from Year 5.

Course Structure

The MBBS programme at City St George's is designed to integrate clinical experience from the very beginning, preparing students to become competent and compassionate doctors.

Years 1-2: Basic Medical Sciences

Foundation in biomedical sciences with early patient contact. Students begin clinical skills training and have regular exposure to patients in hospital and community settings. The curriculum is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group teaching, and practical sessions.

Year 3: Systems-Based Learning

Integrated teaching organised around body systems, combining scientific understanding with clinical application. Increased time in clinical environments with more hands-on patient interaction.

Years 4-5: Clinical Rotations

Full clinical immersion with rotations across medical and surgical specialties. Students work as part of clinical teams in hospitals and community settings, developing the practical skills needed for foundation training.

Intercalation

An optional intercalated BSc/MSc is available, typically taken between Years 2 and 3, or Years 3 and 4. This allows students to study a subject in depth and develop research skills.

Location and Teaching Sites

Students are based primarily at the Tooting campus, with clinical teaching across South West London and Surrey:

  • St George's Hospital, Tooting - Major teaching hospital and Level 1 trauma centre
  • St George's University Campus - Lectures, anatomy, and simulation facilities
  • Kingston Hospital - District general hospital placements
  • Croydon University Hospital - District general hospital placements
  • Epsom and St Helier Hospitals - Additional placement sites
  • GP Practices - Community placements across South London and Surrey

"What makes City St George's special is the clinical exposure. St George's Hospital is one of London's busiest trauma centres, you'll see things that students at other medical schools might not encounter until they're qualified. The atmosphere is supportive and collegial. It's a medical school that really prepares you for the realities of being a doctor."

City St George's Medicine FAQ

What UCAT score do I need for City St George's?

You need a minimum of 500 in each UCAT section. There is no fixed overall cut-off published in advance: City St George's ranks every applicant who meets the entry criteria by total UCAT score and fills its interview places from the top down, so the cut-off lands wherever the places run out. It publishes the figure afterwards. For the 2026 cycle the overall cut-off was 1880 for home applicants (graduate and non-graduate) and 1640 / 1630 for overseas applicants. Remember that Abstract Reasoning was removed from the UCAT in 2025, so pre-2026 cut-offs are on a different scale and cannot be compared directly.

What is the difference between St George's and City St George's?

In 2025, St George's, University of London merged with City, University of London to form City St George's, University of London. The medical school continues to operate from the same Tooting campus with the same programmes and teaching hospitals. The merger brings additional research opportunities and resources from City.

Does City St George's use MMI or panel interviews?

City St George's uses the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format with 7-8 stations. Each station lasts a few minutes and tests different competencies. This format allows you to demonstrate a range of skills and recover if one station doesn't go well.

Can I apply to City St George's GEM without a science degree?

Yes, the Graduate Entry Medicine programme (A101) accepts graduates from any discipline, including non-science degrees. You'll need a 2:1 or above and must sit the GAMSAT. See our dedicated GEM page for full details.

Is City St George's good for international students?

International students can apply to the 5-year Medicine MBBS (A100) programme. The school offers a supportive environment and London location that many international students find attractive. However, the Graduate Entry programme is only open to Home fee status applicants.

How can I improve my chances of getting into City St George's Medicine?

Focus on achieving strong academics (AAA with solid GCSEs), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT to score competitively, and gain meaningful healthcare experience that you can reflect on thoughtfully. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.

Is City St George's a good medical school?

Yes, City St George's is a well-respected medical school with excellent clinical training. Based at St George's Hospital, a major trauma centre, students gain exceptional hands-on experience. The school is known for its supportive atmosphere and commitment to widening participation. The 2025 merger with City brings additional research opportunities.
