HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

All applicants to the A100 programme must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. Dundee uses a threshold score that varies each year based on the strength of the applicant pool.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cut-off Score | Not published. Dundee's entry requirements page states plainly: "There is no minimum cut-off score." |
| Contextual / widening access UCAT threshold | Not published as a threshold. In Dundee's own 2023/24 figures, interviewed Category 1 contextual applicants averaged 2,490 against 2,742 for non-contextual applicants (pre-2025 scale). |
| How UCAT is Used | Total cognitive score combined with academics for shortlisting |
| SJT Consideration | Not used. Dundee states that UCAT Situational Judgement (SJT) bands are not used as part of the initial selection for interview |
| UCAT Weighting | Significant factor in interview selection |
"Dundee is known for valuing the whole applicant, but your UCAT still needs to be competitive. The good news is that Scottish students are interviewed at far higher rates here than applicants from elsewhere in the UK — look at Dundee’s own published figures before you spend a UCAS choice. And do not prepare for this interview as though it were an MMI: it is a group discussion, so the skill being tested is how you work with other candidates, not how you perform alone."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.
Dundee does not use an MMI circuit for A100. If you have been preparing for a run of short, independently scored stations, prepare differently for this one. Dundee's published format is a group discussion followed by a structured one-to-one with an assessor. No offers are made without an interview.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Two parts: an observed preparatory group discussion, then a structured interaction with an assessor |
| Part 1 — group discussion | You discuss a set scenario in a group with five other applicants, working from broad prompts. An assessor observes without joining in. Around 30 minutes. |
| Part 2 — assessor discussion | Your group moves to another room and meets a different assessor, who directs a conversation framed around the same prompts. |
| Total time on the day | 1 hour 40 minutes including registration and welcome, plus an optional 30-minute tour and Q&A. |
| Number of MMI stations | Not applicable — Dundee does not run an MMI for A100 |
| What's Assessed | Your ability to communicate effectively; your ability to work within a group; your personal values; your professionalism |
| Location and format | In person at the School of Medicine, Ninewells campus. International applicants may be offered a remote interview on Blackboard Collaborate; UK-based applicants are asked to attend in person, with online requests reviewed case by case. |
| Scoring weights | Not published. Dundee does not publish how interview scores are weighted against UCAT and academics. |
What this changes for you: the thing being assessed is how you behave with other applicants, not how you perform alone under a bell. Dominating the group discussion is as damaging as saying nothing. Dundee also asks applicants not to discuss the specific scenario with others or online, and will check photo ID before you start — bring it whether you interview in person or online.

Dundee publishes A100 admissions statistics by year of entry. The figures below are its own, for 2023/24 entry — the most recent on that page at the time of review (last updated 8 April 2024).
| Metric (2023/24 entry) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applications | 1,951 |
| Invited to interview | 844 |
| Offers | 570 |
| Matriculations (students who actually started) | 218 |
| Average UCAT of interviewed applicants | 2,675 (highest 3,400, lowest 1,900) |
| Fee status | Applications | Invited to interview | Offers | Matriculations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Scottish | 985 | 625 | 450 | 155 |
| Rest of UK / Republic of Ireland | 597 | 138 | 65 | 32 |
| Overseas | 368 | 81 | 55 | 31 |
Read that table before you use a UCAS choice here. A Scottish applicant had roughly a 63% chance of being interviewed; a rest-of-UK applicant roughly 23%; an overseas applicant roughly 22%. Medicine is a controlled subject in Scotland and the number of places is set by the Scottish Funding Council, which caps how many non-Scottish students Dundee can take.

Dundee expects applicants to have undertaken relevant experience that demonstrates their understanding of and commitment to a career in medicine. While there is no strict minimum hours requirement, they are looking for evidence of:
If traditional clinical experience was not possible, Dundee will consider virtual work experience, caring responsibilities, and other evidence of commitment to helping others.

Dundee considers applicants who have retaken qualifications, provided resits are completed within a two-year period from the first sitting. Significant improvement should be demonstrated.

Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. You will need to demonstrate how your application has strengthened since your previous attempt.
A100 only
| Programme | International Students |
|---|---|
| Medicine MBChB (A100) | Accepted |
| Gateway to Medicine (A104) | Scottish domiciled only |
| ScotGEM (A101) | UK/EU only |
Note: International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 7.0 overall with minimum 7.0 in each component.
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
Dundee runs the Scottish framework, which means SIMD, not POLAR4 or English IMD, and grades expressed in Scottish Highers. Dundee is also unusually transparent: it publishes what actually happens to contextual applicants, and the numbers are striking.
If you meet any of those conditions, the University of Dundee will assess you against its published widening access entry requirements instead of the standard ones, and — if you carry a priority contextual flag and are on course to meet those requirements — you will normally be interviewed.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| A lower published entry requirement | Medicine MBChB: AAABB at Higher instead of the standard AAAAB. Dundee publishes both side by side on its own entry requirements page — this is not a discretionary adjustment, it is the stated requirement for widening access applicants. |
| A near-automatic interview if you hold a priority flag | Dundee states that applicants with a priority contextual flag will normally be interviewed if they are on course to meet the widening access requirements. Its own 2023/24 figures show what that means in practice: 222 of 239 Category 1 contextual applicants were invited to interview — roughly 93%. For non-contextual applicants the figure was 521 of 1,471, about 35%. |
| A materially lower UCAT bar in practice | There is no published cut-off, but the published averages tell the story. Among interviewed applicants in 2023/24 entry, Category 1 contextual applicants averaged 2,490 on the UCAT against 2,742 for non-contextual applicants, with a lowest interviewed score of 1,900. (Scores are on the pre-2025 scale, maximum 3,600 — Dundee warns they are not directly comparable to current scores.) |
| A separate, far lower-barrier route: Gateway to Medicine (A104) | A one-year pre-medical year at Ninewells leading to a direct place in year 1 of the five-year MBChB. Entry is AABB at Higher by the end of S6 including Chemistry and Biology, plus National 5 Maths at grade B — and no UCAT at all. It includes clinical placement, peer tutoring and the option of paid NHS healthcare support worker work. |
| Targeted outreach support | Dundee publishes subject sessions for prospective Medicine applicants including UCAT preparation, UCAT tutoring and interview support. Useful preparation — but no grade reduction or interview guarantee is attached to the outreach itself. |
For how every other school handles this, see see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.
Dundee is a Scottish university, so the English fee cap does not apply here. Dundee sets three separate rates, and publishes them on its own course fee page for September 2027 entry.
| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| Scottish students (SAAS-funded) | £1,820 — eligible Scottish-domiciled students apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) to have this paid by the Scottish Government. Subject to confirmation by the Scottish Government. |
| Rest of UK (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) and Republic of Ireland | £10,050 — covered by a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. Irish students apply to SAAS for the loan. Subject to confirmation by the UK Government. |
| International | £57,600 — a deposit is required, with the remaining balance payable across seven interest-free monthly instalments. |
Source: Dundee's own fees and funding page for Medicine MBChB, September 2027 entry. International fees rise each year by the higher of 5% or CPI; Home fees track the regulated cap.
Dundee's MBChB programme uses an innovative spiral curriculum that builds knowledge incrementally while providing early clinical exposure:
Integration of basic medical sciences with early clinical skills. Students begin patient contact from week one through community placements. The spiral approach means topics are revisited with increasing complexity.
Bridging pre-clinical and clinical learning. Increased clinical placements while continuing to build scientific knowledge. Students gain confidence in clinical environments.
Full clinical immersion with rotations across specialties at Ninewells Hospital, Perth Royal Infirmary, and community settings. Final year includes assistantship preparing students for foundation training.
An optional intercalated degree (BMSc) is available, typically taken between years 3 and 4. Popular options include Anatomy, Clinical Pharmacology, and International Health.
Students benefit from Dundee's excellent clinical facilities:
"Dundee offers something unique: a world-class medical education in a city where you can actually afford to live. The teaching hospital is literally attached to the medical school, meaning you're never far from clinical learning. Students consistently rate Dundee as one of the friendliest, most supportive medical schools in the UK."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Applying to medical school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK medical schools and how they compare, see the UK Medical Schools hub page.
Dundee uses a variable threshold that changes each year based on the applicant pool. Generally, aim for a total cognitive score in the top third of applicants nationally. Your SJT band does not matter here: Dundee states that UCAT Situational Judgement (SJT) bands are not used as part of the initial selection for interview, so selection rests on your cognitive score alongside your academics.
Neither. For A100 Dundee runs a two-part interview: an observed group discussion with five other applicants (around 30 minutes), then a structured discussion with a different assessor. The whole session takes 1 hour 40 minutes including registration. You are assessed on communication, working within a group, your personal values and your professionalism. There is no MMI circuit and no station count.
Yes, Dundee is an excellent choice for Scottish students. They give appropriate weighting to Scottish qualifications, offer the Gateway programme for widening participation, and Scottish students can have tuition fees paid by SAAS. The central location makes it accessible from across Scotland.
A100 is the standard 5-year undergraduate programme using UCAT, open to school leavers and graduates. ScotGEM is a 4-year graduate entry programme jointly run with St Andrews that uses GAMSAT instead of UCAT and focuses on rural/community healthcare. ScotGEM has its own dedicated page.
Yes, you can apply to both programmes if eligible, but this will use two of your four UCAS choices. You would need to sit both UCAT (for A100) and GAMSAT (for ScotGEM) in the same application cycle.
Focus on achieving strong academics (AAA at A-Level or equivalent), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT (there is no threshold to clear, but it is used to shortlist), and gain meaningful work experience you can reflect on articulately. Interview preparation is also crucial, and at Dundee that means practising group discussion rather than MMI stations. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.
Yes, Dundee is consistently ranked among the top UK medical schools for student satisfaction, teaching quality, and graduate outcomes. The innovative spiral curriculum, early clinical exposure, and supportive learning environment make it an excellent choice for aspiring doctors.

Most applicants treat the medical school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
