HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

Considering Edge Hill Medicine? Here's a complete breakdown of entry requirements, admissions criteria, and the application process for September 2027.
Edge Hill University Medical School is one of England's newer medical schools, established to address the shortage of doctors in the North West of England. Based in Ormskirk, Lancashire, the school has a strong community focus and is committed to training doctors who will serve local populations.
The medical school places a particular emphasis on primary care, community medicine, and addressing health inequalities in the region. All applicants must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply, and the score must come from the admissions cycle immediately before your intended year of entry. Edge Hill does not publish a cut-off score — but it is not scoring you holistically at this stage. It ranks every academically eligible applicant by total UCAT score and draws a line based on how many interviews it intends to hold that year.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cut-off Score | No published cut-off |
| How UCAT is Used | Applicants who pass academic screening are ranked by total UCAT score. A threshold is set each cycle depending on the number of interviews to be held and the number of places available. The threshold is extended for candidates who meet Edge Hill's widening participation criteria or who have completed its Widening Access to Medicine Programme. |
| SJT Consideration | Bands 1, 2 or 3 required — any candidate scoring band 4 in the Situational Judgement Test is automatically rejected |
| UCAT Weighting | UCAT decides who is interviewed. After interview, applicants are ranked on MMI score alone — the UCAT score is not carried forward into the offer ranking. |
| Personal statement | Edge Hill's admissions policy states personal statements and academic references “are not routinely used in selection for interview”. They may be used to separate applicants whose MMI scores tie at the offer threshold. |
"Edge Hill is one of those medical schools where your regional connection matters as much as your academics. They're looking for students who genuinely want to serve communities in the North West. If that's you, make sure it comes through in every part of your application, your personal statement, your UCAT prep, and especially your interview."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Edge Hill publishes a four-stage process:
No offers are made without an interview. Final offers are subject to satisfactory references, DBS and health clearance.
Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.
Edge Hill uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format to assess candidates. This allows the admissions team to evaluate a range of competencies across different stations.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | MMI (Multiple Mini Interview) |
| Number of Stations | Not published |
| Duration per Station | Not published |
| Interview Period | Not published for 2027 entry — Edge Hill's course page says “Details TBC” |
| What's Assessed | Motivation for the Edge Hill MBChB; verbal communication; integrity and probity; teamwork and leadership; empathy and compassion; awareness of current health challenges; ethical awareness; awareness of self and others; prioritisation and decision-making; interpretation of data |
| Feedback | Not given — Edge Hill does not offer feedback on individual interview performance, and will not release individual station scores |
Edge Hill publishes the attributes it assesses (listed in the table above) but not the station topics. The list below is indicative of UK MMI practice generally.

| UCAT cut-off score | Not published, and genuinely variable — it depends on the scores of that year's applicants and the number of places |
| Regional Priority | The residency requirement is explicit on A110 (North West, one year before application). On A100 Edge Hill publishes no formal regional quota. |
Edge Hill expects applicants to demonstrate a genuine understanding of medicine and healthcare through relevant experience. While there is no strict minimum hours requirement, they are looking for evidence of:
Edge Hill values quality over quantity, meaningful, reflective experience is more important than accumulating hours.
Edge Hill University Medical School has a strong commitment to training doctors who will work in the North West of England. This regional focus is reflected in their admissions process.
Students from these areas are given priority in the selection process. The medical school is particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate a genuine commitment to serving local communities after graduation.
"Edge Hill isn't just about getting into medical school, it's about building a cohort of doctors who will make a real difference in the North West. If you're from the region and genuinely want to serve your community, make sure that passion comes through in your application. They're not looking for candidates who see Edge Hill as a backup; they want students who are genuinely excited about their mission."

Yes
Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. You should demonstrate how your application has improved since your previous attempt.
Not eligible
Edge Hill is not currently able to accept international applicants. Its Medical School Admissions Policy states that applicants who are considered international students for fees purposes are not eligible to apply, and that anyone assessed as an international applicant will be advised that the university cannot take international applicants on either the MBChB Medicine or the MBChB Medicine with Foundation Year.
Edge Hill's published widening participation mechanisms — the extended UCAT threshold on A100 and the A110 foundation route — are set out in full in the Contextual & Widening Participation Offers section above, including the exact eligibility criteria Edge Hill publishes for A110.
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
Edge Hill runs two routes, and they treat widening participation very differently. The five-year A100 gives WP applicants a wider UCAT net. The six-year A110 foundation route gives a three-grade reduction, but it is only open to applicants who meet a published eligibility list in full.
For A110 Medicine with Foundation Year, Edge Hill publishes the criteria in three layers. You must satisfy all three:
For the five-year A100, Edge Hill does not publish its full widening participation criteria list on the course page. It says only that the UCAT threshold is extended for candidates who “meet specific widening participation criteria or have successfully completed the Widening Access to Medicine Programme at Edge Hill University”. If you think you may qualify, email AskMedSchool@edgehill.ac.uk and get the current list in writing before you decide where to apply.
If you meet the A110 criteria, Edge Hill will ask substantially lower grades of you in exchange for an extra year. If you meet the A100 widening participation criteria, it will not lower your grades — it will let you through the UCAT gate on a lower score than other applicants need.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| Extended UCAT threshold (A100, five-year) | Edge Hill ranks all academically eligible applicants by UCAT score and sets a threshold each year based on how many interviews it plans to hold. That threshold “will be extended for candidates who meet specific widening participation criteria or have successfully completed the Widening Access to Medicine Programme at Edge Hill University”. In practice: a UCAT score that would not get another applicant an interview may get you one. Edge Hill does not publish how far the threshold is extended. |
| Three-grade reduction via the foundation route (A110, six-year) | BBB instead of AAA, with Biology and Chemistry at grade B or above. If Biology or Chemistry is at A or A*, the third subject may be accepted at grade C. That is a materially lower bar than any contextual offer Edge Hill makes on A100. |
| Automatic progression from the foundation year | Passing the foundation year takes you straight into Year 1 of the five-year MBChB. No reapplication, no second UCAT. |
| Widening Access to Medicine Programme | Completing Edge Hill's own outreach programme qualifies you for the extended UCAT threshold on A100 in its own right, without needing to meet the other widening participation criteria. |
For a side-by-side comparison, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.
| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| Home (UK) — A100 and A110 | £10,050 |
| International | Not applicable — international applicants are not eligible for either course |
Edge Hill's own course pages state: “For the academic year 2027/28, the UK Full-Time tuition fee is currently set to £10,050… subject to Parliamentary approval and likely to be increased in line with inflation (RPIX).” The same figure is published for both the five-year MBChB and the six-year MBChB with Foundation Year. For 2026/27 entry the figure is £9,790.
EU/EEA and Swiss students with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, and Irish nationals, may be eligible for the UK fee rate. An NHS bursary is available subject to availability in years 5 and 6 of study.
The MBChB programme at Edge Hill is designed around integrated, patient-centred learning with early clinical exposure.
Introduction to the basic sciences underpinning medicine, including anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Early clinical placements introduce students to patient interaction and the healthcare system.
Systems-based learning covering the major organ systems, their functions, and common pathologies. Continued clinical exposure with increasing complexity.
Deeper integration of clinical and scientific knowledge. Students spend significant time in clinical settings developing practical skills.
Rotations through clinical specialties including surgery, medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and psychiatry.
Final year focusing on developing the skills and knowledge needed for foundation training. Includes elective opportunities and preparation for the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA).
Students at Edge Hill benefit from clinical placements across the North West of England:
This broad range of placements ensures students experience both hospital and community-based medicine, preparing them for careers across all settings.
Applying to medical school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:

Edge Hill does not publish a specific UCAT cut-off score. They use a holistic approach considering your overall UCAT performance alongside academic achievements and personal qualities. Focus on performing consistently well across all sections. Note that the Situational Judgement Test is applied as a hard rule: any candidate scoring band 4 is automatically rejected.
Yes, Edge Hill has a strong regional focus and prioritises applicants from the North West of England, including Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, and Cumbria. This reflects their mission to train doctors who will serve local communities.
Edge Hill uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. It does not publish how many stations there are or how long each one lasts — its course page currently says “Details TBC” for the interview stage. It does publish what the MMIs assess: motivation for the Edge Hill MBChB, verbal communication, integrity, teamwork and leadership, empathy and compassion, awareness of current health challenges, ethical awareness, awareness of self and others, prioritisation and decision-making, and interpretation of data.
Yes, you can still apply, but be aware that students from the North West of England are prioritised. If you're applying from outside the region, you'll need an exceptionally strong application and should demonstrate genuine reasons for wanting to study and potentially work in the North West.
Yes, Edge Hill offers a 6-year Medicine with Foundation Year programme (A110) for students from the North West who may not meet standard entry requirements. This programme is specifically designed for students who have lived in the North West for at least one year prior to application.
Focus on strong academics (AAA), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT, gain meaningful work experience, and demonstrate genuine commitment to community medicine and the North West region. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.
Yes, Edge Hill is a modern medical school with a community-focused curriculum, strong emphasis on patient-centred care, and excellent clinical placements. It's particularly well-suited for students committed to primary care and serving local communities in the North West of England.
Most applicants treat the medical school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
