How Long Is an MMI Interview?

A full timing breakdown of the MMI interview, including station length, reading time, and total duration

The total duration of an MMI interview is typically between 1 and 2 hours. However, the exact length depends on the number of stations, the time allocated per station, and whether the university includes rest stations in the circuit. Understanding the timing is important for preparation — you need to be able to perform consistently across multiple short, high-pressure interactions without losing focus.

MMI Timing Breakdown

Component Typical Duration
Reading time (per station) Approximately 2 minutes
Station duration 5 to 8 minutes (most commonly 7 minutes)
Transition between stations 30 seconds to 1 minute
Number of assessed stations 6 to 10 (varies by university)
Rest stations 1 to 2 (unscored, included in some circuits)
Total MMI circuit time Approximately 1 to 2 hours

How Each Station Is Timed

At each station, you typically receive around 2 minutes of reading time. During this period, you stand outside the station and read a printed prompt that describes the scenario, question, or task. This is your opportunity to collect your thoughts and plan your approach before you enter the room.

Once the bell sounds, you enter the station and have 5 to 8 minutes (depending on the university) to complete the task. The most common station length at UK medical schools is 7 minutes. A bell or buzzer sounds when your time is up, and you move to the next station regardless of whether you have finished.

This timing structure means you need to be concise and focused. There is no time for lengthy preambles or vague answers. The ability to structure your response quickly and communicate clearly under time pressure is one of the core skills the MMI assesses.

Rest Stations

Many MMI circuits include one or more rest stations. These are unscored stations where you are not assessed. They exist partly to give you a brief pause and partly for logistical reasons — they help manage the flow of candidates through the circuit. Do not be tempted to use rest stations to rehearse answers for upcoming stations. Stay calm, take a breath, and reset your focus.

The Full Interview Day

While the MMI circuit itself lasts 1 to 2 hours, you should plan to be at the interview venue for significantly longer. Most universities schedule the MMI within a broader interview day that includes:

  • A welcome talk and introduction from admissions staff
  • The MMI circuit itself
  • A campus or facilities tour
  • An opportunity to speak with current students
  • An information session about the course

In total, expect to be on site for a half day. Arriving early is always advisable to allow time to settle in and manage any nerves before the circuit begins.

"Seven minutes sounds short until you're in the room. Then it can feel either very long or very short, depending on how well you've prepared. The trick is to practise responding to prompts within the time limit until it becomes natural. When you know you can fill seven minutes with structured, thoughtful content, the time pressure stops being a problem."
