HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

All applicants must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. Hull York uses the UCAT as part of their holistic assessment approach, considering it alongside academic achievements and contextual factors.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cut-off Score | No fixed cut-off - holistic assessment |
| How UCAT is Used | Considered alongside academics and contextual factors in shortlisting |
| SJT Consideration | Bands 1-3 only — "you will need to achieve Band 1, 2 or 3 in the Situational Judgement Test part of the UCAT". Band 4 is a hard exclusion. |
| UCAT Weighting | Significant weighting in initial shortlisting |
"Hull York takes a genuinely holistic approach to admissions. They're looking for well-rounded individuals who demonstrate the values they want in their future doctors. A strong UCAT helps, but it's not everything, your personal qualities and experiences matter just as much here."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
HYMS publishes its shortlisting score openly, which most schools do not. Selection for interview is a ranking out of 100 — there is no fixed score to hit, you are simply ranked against everyone else applying to the same programme in the same cycle, and the top scorers are invited:
| Component | Points |
|---|---|
| GCSE results (best six achieved grades for A100; best five for A108) | 35 |
| UCAT total score (by decile) | 35 |
| UCAT Situational Judgement Test (by band; Band 4 not accepted) | 15 |
| Contextual admissions points (UK school leavers only) | up to 15 |
| Personal statement | Not scored — but used for borderline decisions and as interview material |
Contextual points are therefore worth as much as the entire SJT component. See the widening participation section below for how they are awarded.
Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.
Hull York uses the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. This involves rotating through several timed stations, each assessing different attributes important for a career in medicine. The number of stations and the interview mode depend on your fee status: home candidates "attend interviews in person at the University of Hull and University of York campuses", while overseas candidates "attend interviews online".
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) |
| Number of Stations (Home fee status) | 5 stations, in person: group exercise (22 points), mini interview 1 (17), mini interview 2 (17), scenario station (17), student station (17) |
| Number of Stations (Overseas fee status) | 6 stations, online: three mini interviews, a student station, an individual scenario station and a group exercise |
| Location / Mode | Home candidates in person at the University of Hull and University of York campuses; overseas candidates online |
| Interview Period | January to March |
| What's Assessed | Communication, ethical reasoning, problem-solving, teamwork, empathy |
Important: HYMS values authenticity and genuine reflection. Focus on demonstrating your personal qualities rather than rehearsed answers.

These are Hull York Medical School's own published figures for 2025 entry — the most recent cycle it has released.
| Metric | A100 Medicine | A108 Medicine with a Gateway Year |
|---|---|---|
| Applications received | 1,625 | 416 |
| Candidates invited to interview | 904 | 119 |
| Offers made | 796 | 111 |
| Places available | Not published | Not published |
| UCAT cut-off score | Not published — HYMS states plainly that it does "not look for a specific score to be achieved", and ranks applicants instead. | |
Read the offer figure carefully: HYMS made more offers than it has places, as every medical school does, because not every offer is accepted or met at results time.
Hull York expects applicants to have undertaken relevant experience that demonstrates their understanding of healthcare and caring for others. They take a flexible approach to what counts as valid experience.
Quality of reflection is more important than quantity of hours. HYMS wants to see that you understand what a career in medicine involves and have thought carefully about whether it's right for you.

"Applicants who are repeating or who have repeated Year 13 must have achieved a minimum score of BBB in their A Levels in their initial sitting." Applicants "may repeat or restart Year 12 a single time with no restrictions".

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
HYMS is one of the most thoroughly documented schools in the UK on this, and it runs four separate mechanisms rather than one. They stack differently depending on which you qualify for, so it is worth working out exactly where you land.
Contextual admissions at HYMS are for UK school leavers with Home fee status only. You must confirm your eligibility on an online form sent shortly after the UCAS deadline, and the deadline for that form is 30 October. HYMS does not accept late submissions, and anything left off the form cannot be taken into account for that cycle. Miss it and you lose every mechanism below.
If you qualify, HYMS may rank you higher for interview, send you straight to interview, and make you a conditional offer one or two grades below the standard AAA.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| Contextual points that move you up the interview ranking | Up to 15 points out of 100 at the selection-for-interview stage: UCAT bursary 8; POLAR4 Quintile 1 3, Quintile 2 2; first in family 1; below-average Progress 8 school 3; care experienced, refugee status, military background, or Gypsy, Roma or Traveller background 15 each; completion of a listed WP programme 7. Contextual data is then recalculated at the offer stage for up to 10 further points, weighted by interview performance. |
| A fast track straight to interview (A100 only) | If you have UCAT Decile 4 or above plus one of: care experience, refugee status, military background, Gypsy, Roma or Traveller background, or completion of a listed WP programme — you bypass the competitive ranking entirely and go straight to interview. A second list (Realising Opportunities within the year of application, or a graduate / final-year student of BSc Biomedical Science at Hull or York) does the same at Decile 5 or above. You must confirm eligibility on the online form by 30 October. |
| A Reduced Offer: one grade lower | AAB including Biology and Chemistry, instead of AAA, with no restriction on which A-level the B falls in. You need two or more of: UCAT bursary, POLAR4 Q1, POLAR4 Q2, first in family, or a school with a Progress 8 score of −0.25 or below — or any one of: care experienced, refugee status, military background, Gypsy/Roma/Traveller background. Only available if you make HYMS your firm choice. |
| An Alternative Offer: two grades lower | ABB including Biology and Chemistry for applicants who have successfully completed one of the listed widening participation programmes. The Code of Practice also promises “a flexible approach, based on a holistic academic assessment of the application, to other entry criteria” for these applicants. Firm-choice only. |
| A whole separate route: the Gateway Year (A108) | A six-year programme with a Gateway Year at the University of Hull. The offer is BBC (B in Biology, B in a second science, any third subject) against AAA for the standard MB BS — a three-grade reduction. The GCSE requirement drops to five GCSEs at 9–4/A*–C including English Language and Maths, and only your best five are scored rather than your best six. The UCAT requirement is reduced to the SJT alone (Band 1, 2 or 3; no cognitive-subtest score used). Applicants resident in the HYMS region get priority at every stage plus 2 extra selection points on top of their contextual points. |
| The EPQ offer (open to everyone, but it stacks a route) | AAB with AA in Biology and Chemistry, B in your third subject, and grade A in the EPQ. Not a widening participation measure, but a second way to a one-grade reduction that some applicants can use instead of — or as a backstop to — the contextual Reduced Offer. Firm-choice only, and not available to resit applicants. |
For a side-by-side view of how every school handles this, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.
| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| Home (UK) | £10,050 — the statutory cap for England in 2027/28. HYMS states that "fees for 2027/28 have not yet been confirmed and are subject to increase in line with government policy"; its last published figure was £9,790 for 2026 entry. |
| International (including EU) | 2027 entry: TBC. HYMS publishes £49,750 per year for 2026 entry and has not yet released a 2027 figure. International fees are subject to annual increases in line with CPI inflation, up to a maximum of 10%. |
Verified from Hull York Medical School's own fees and funding page. Your fee status (UK or international) is assessed by the University of York. For international students on a course longer than one year, the fee quoted in your offer letter normally covers one year only — budget for increases in later years.
The MB BS programme is designed around early clinical contact and integration of scientific knowledge with clinical practice.
Introduction to biomedical sciences, clinical skills, and early patient contact. Teaching takes place at both York and Hull campuses, with students experiencing both university environments.
Transition to clinical learning with hospital-based attachments. Students begin spending more time in clinical environments across the region.
Full clinical rotations across specialties including medicine, surgery, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and general practice. Students are based primarily in clinical settings throughout Yorkshire and the Humber.
Optional intercalated degrees are available, allowing students to pursue research or specialist study for an additional year.
Students benefit from teaching across two universities and multiple NHS trusts:
"What makes Hull York special is the sense of community. It's a smaller school where you'll know your cohort and staff well. The clinical exposure across Yorkshire is excellent, you'll see a real variety of patients and conditions. Plus, the cost of living is much lower than London, which is a real practical advantage."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Applying to medical school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK medical schools and how they compare, see the UK Medical Schools hub page.
Hull York doesn't use a fixed UCAT cut-off. They take a holistic approach, considering your UCAT alongside academics and contextual factors. The one hard rule is the Situational Judgement Test: you will need to achieve Band 1, 2 or 3, so Band 4 rules you out. Focus on performing consistently well across all sections and demonstrating the qualities they value.
Hull York uses the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. Home fee status candidates interview in person at the University of Hull and University of York campuses across five stations: a group exercise, two mini interviews, a scenario station and a student station. Overseas fee status candidates interview online across six stations: three mini interviews, a student station, an individual scenario station and a group exercise.
Yes, but there are conditions. If you are repeating or have repeated Year 13, you must have achieved a minimum of BBB in your A levels at your initial sitting. You may repeat or restart Year 12 a single time with no restrictions.
International students can apply to the 5-year Medicine MB BS (A100) programme. However, the Gateway Year programme is only open to Home fee status applicants. HYMS has a welcoming international community.
The Gateway Year (A108) is a 6-year programme designed for students from widening participation backgrounds who show potential but may not meet standard entry requirements. It provides a supportive foundation year before progressing to the main MB BS programme. See our dedicated Gateway Year page for full details.
Focus on achieving strong academics (at least AAB predicted, with good GCSEs), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT and avoid Situational Judgement Test Band 4, and gain meaningful work experience that you can reflect on thoughtfully. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.
Yes, Hull York consistently ranks highly for student satisfaction and teaching quality. It offers a supportive community atmosphere, excellent clinical exposure across Yorkshire, and a lower cost of living than many other medical school locations. The unique joint-school experience across two universities is also valued by students.
Most applicants treat the medical school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
