HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

UCAT Requirements

All applicants must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. Imperial switched from BMAT to UCAT in 2025 and uses UCAT scores as a primary factor in shortlisting applicants for interview.

Aspect Detail
Minimum total, Home applicants (2026 entry) 2320 out of 2700
Minimum total, contextual applicants (2026 entry) 2170 out of 2700 — a 150-point reduction
2027 entry thresholds Not yet published. Imperial states thresholds "will vary year to year depending on the distribution of scores in each cohort of applicants and the ratio of applicants to places". Treat the 2026 figures as a guide, not a target.
UCAT Scale Scored out of 2700 (Abstract Reasoning removed)
SJT Requirement Band 3 minimum — Band 4 is discounted. This applies to contextual applicants too; there is no SJT relaxation.
Interview Invitations Imperial normally interviews the top third of applicants, on a rolling basis from December
Mitigating circumstances For 2027 entry, special circumstances must be submitted via UCAT. Imperial states it is "unable to consider any mitigating circumstances that do not come via UCAT directly."

"Imperial is one of the most UCAT-dependent medical schools. Your score genuinely matters here. With the switch from BMAT to UCAT, they now use clear thresholds to shortlist, which means scoring in the top percentiles is essential. The good news is that UCAT can be prepared for systematically, and that's exactly what we help students do at Future Doc."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

How Imperial Uses Your UCAT

  • Shortlisting: UCAT score is used alongside academic eligibility to rank candidates
  • Threshold approach: Applicants below the threshold are typically not interviewed
  • Contextual adjustment: Widening participation applicants may have a lower threshold
  • Year-to-year variation: Thresholds vary depending on the cohort's score distribution

Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.

Interview Process

Imperial uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. Its stated reason is that getting several independent interviewer assessments means a candidate who does less well on one component can still be assessed fairly on the others.

Aspect Detail
Format MMI (Multiple Mini Interview)
Number of stations Not published. Imperial's own MMI page describes the station topics and marking but does not state how many stations there are, and warns that "questions and stations may vary through the years".
Time per station 5 minutes to answer the questions in each station
Scoring 10 points per station — 6 for content (what you say) and 4 for communication (how you say it)
Invitation timing Rolling invitations from December, based on UCAT performance, to roughly the top third of applicants
Mitigating circumstances at interview Imperial publishes a Mitigating Circumstances Form for MMIs, due 5 working days before your interview

Imperial states there is often no right or wrong answer — the interviewers are assessing your ability to explain your thinking. If you change your mind mid-answer, say so and explain your reasoning; that is treated as reflectiveness, not indecision.

MMI Station Topics May Include

  • Teamwork and leadership scenarios
  • Motivation for studying medicine
  • Understanding the role of a doctor
  • Empathy and breaking bad news exercises
  • Ethical dilemmas in healthcare
  • Data interpretation and critical thinking
  • Current healthcare news and NHS issues

Important: Imperial explicitly advises candidates to stay up to date with current healthcare news. They believe MMIs give fair and accurate results because multiple assessments mean one poor station doesn't determine your overall outcome.

Work Experience Requirements

Imperial takes a thoughtful approach to work experience. They require applicants to demonstrate understanding of healthcare realities and the skills needed for medicine, but they do not specify minimum hours or particular types of placements.

  • No specific type or duration of work experience is required
  • Quality of reflection matters more than the placement itself
  • Clinical experience is valued but not mandatory (especially post-COVID)
  • Online clinical experience is considered as valuable as in-person
  • Community and volunteer work is looked upon favourably
  • Evidence of leadership and teamwork should be demonstrated

"Imperial explicitly says they care more about what you understood and learned from your experiences than what you actually did. This is refreshing, but it also means you need to be excellent at reflection. In your personal statement and interview, you need to articulate insights about medicine that go beyond 'I saw doctors helping patients.' Think about the challenges, the systems, the emotions."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Special Applicant Categories

Do They Accept Resits?

No

Imperial does not accept resits for the Medicine MBBS programme. Qualifications that have been resat will not be considered unless you have applied for mitigating circumstances with exceptional supporting evidence. This is one of the strictest resit policies among UK medical schools.

Do They Accept Re-applicants?

Yes

Re-applicants can apply again to Imperial. You will need to demonstrate meaningful improvement in your application since your previous attempt, whether through enhanced UCAT preparation, additional experiences, or refined reflection.

International Students

Accepted (A100 only)

Programme International Students
Medicine MBBS/BSc (A100) 74 Overseas places available
Graduate Entry (Pears Cumbria) Home students only

Note: International applicants are subject to the same academic and UCAT requirements as Home applicants. EU students who commenced studies after 1 August 2021 are charged overseas fees.

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

At Imperial the adjustment is almost entirely a UCAT one. The grades do not move. If you are weighing Imperial against a school that drops two A-Level grades for contextual applicants, that distinction should change your shortlist.

They Might Apply To You If…

You must be a UK applicant with Home fee status, plus meet at least one of the following:

  • You are care experienced — a care leaver, or you have spent time in care under a local authority
  • Your home postcode is in England's Index of Multiple Deprivation quintile 1
  • You currently receive UK government funded free school meals, or received them in the last six years
  • You live in a POLAR4 quintile 1 or 2 area and are first in your family to attend university, or attend a school below the 20th percentile for performance, or attend a school above the 80th percentile for free school meals
  • You have declared carer status, with supporting evidence submitted by 13 November
  • You have taken part in an Imperial outreach programme: Pathways to Medicine, Imperial STEM Potential, STEM Futures, mA*ths Online Programme, Further mA*ths Online Programme, Accelerate, or the Imperial Sutton Trust Summer School and Work Experience

If you meet any of those conditions, Imperial will apply a lower UCAT cut-off to your application and relax one subject requirement. It will not lower the grades it asks of you.

What It Gets You

How it helps What that means for you
A lower UCAT shortlisting threshold For 2026 entry the contextual threshold was 2170 against 2320 for other Home applicants — a 150-point reduction, and the single most valuable thing on this page. At a school that interviews only the top third of applicants, 150 points is the difference between being read and being filtered.
The A* can be in any subject The standard A*AA requires the A* in Biology or Chemistry. Imperial states: "For contextual offers, the A* can be in any subject." If your strongest subject is Maths or an essay subject, that is a genuine, specific relaxation.
Rolling interview invitations from December Invitations go out on a rolling basis from December based on UCAT performance. Clearing the lower threshold puts you in that queue earlier.
College-wide guarantees sit underneath Imperial's institution-wide contextual scheme guarantees an interview to eligible applicants predicted at least AAA who meet the department's contextual admissions test threshold, and guarantees an offer at the department's minimum entry level where the applicant is predicted at least AAA, shows motivation in the personal statement, and meets departmental test and interview minimums. The scheme explicitly includes a reduced minimum threshold for UCAT and GAMSAT.

What It Does Not Get You

  • No grade reduction. The contextual offer is still A*AA, with A and A* in Biology and Chemistry. Only the subject of the A* is relaxed.
  • No SJT relaxation. Contextual applicants must still reach SJT Band 3; Band 4 is discounted for everyone.
  • No separate ranking pool. Imperial publishes no WP-only shortlisting pool for A100 — the lower UCAT threshold and the earlier rolling invitations are the mechanism.
  • Mitigating circumstances must come through UCAT. For 2027 entry Imperial states it is "unable to consider any mitigating circumstances that do not come via UCAT directly." If something affected your test, declare it to UCAT, not to Imperial.
  • No resits, contextual or otherwise. Imperial does not accept resit qualifications, and all qualifications must be taken in the same sitting.
  • Carer status has a hard deadline. Evidence must be in by 13 November — miss it and the flag does not apply.

For how every other school handles this, see see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK) — 2027 entry £10,050 per year
Overseas — 2027 entry £61,550 per year

Both figures are published on Imperial's own A100 course page for October 2027 entry. Imperial charges Home fees in line with the Government's fee cap and expects the fee to rise each year with inflation; the 2028–29 cap has not been announced. Imperial also notes that its Bursary funding for MBBS students in their clinical years increases from 2026–27, with all MBBS students in clinical years receiving additional bursary money on top of the existing bursary.

Course Structure

Imperial's 6-year MBBS/BSc programme is structured into three phases, with an integrated BSc year that sets it apart from most other UK medical schools.

Phase 1: Years 1-3 (Science and Clinical Integration)

The first phase integrates scientific knowledge with clinical skills and professional values. Teaching covers all body systems through lectures, scientific practicals, and case-based learning. Students gain early clinical exposure through community healthcare placements. Year 3 includes substantial clinical attachments in primary care, medicine, and surgery (10 weeks each).

Phase 2: Year 4 (BSc Research Year)

A distinctive feature of the Imperial programme: all students complete a BSc during Year 4. You select a pathway from various research areas, complete taught modules, produce a literature review through group work, and undertake an independent research project. You graduate with a BSc in addition to your MBBS, with the award title reflecting your chosen pathway.

Phase 3: Years 5 and 6 (Clinical Practice)

Clinical placements across hospital and community settings in various specialties, medicine, and surgery. These rotations integrate your knowledge and prepare you for Foundation training. Following final examinations and the Medical Licensing Assessment, there is a preparation for practice module including a pre-foundation assistantship and an elective period.

Additional Opportunities

Exceptional students may be offered the opportunity to include a PhD as part of their studies, reflecting Imperial's strong research focus.

Location and Teaching Sites

Imperial students train across multiple prestigious NHS sites in London:

  • South Kensington Campus - Main Imperial campus for pre-clinical teaching
  • Hammersmith Hospital - Major teaching hospital in West London
  • Charing Cross Hospital - Central London teaching hospital
  • St Mary's Hospital - Paddington, Central London
  • Chelsea and Westminster Hospital - South West London
  • Various GP Practices - Community placements across London

Imperial Medicine FAQ

What UCAT score do I need for Imperial College London?

For 2026 entry Imperial applied a minimum total UCAT score of 2320 for Home applicants and 2170 for contextual applicants, out of 2700, with SJT Band 3 as the minimum in both cases. Thresholds for 2027 entry are not published and Imperial says they vary each year with the cohort. Imperial normally interviews the top third of applicants, so aim well above the published minimum.

Does Imperial use MMI or panel interviews?

Imperial uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. You get 5 minutes per station, and answers are marked out of 6 for content and 4 for communication. Imperial does not publish a station count and says stations vary from year to year, so do not plan around a fixed number.

Can I apply to Imperial if I've resit my A-Levels?

Generally no. Imperial has a strict no-resits policy for Medicine. Qualifications that have been resat will not be accepted unless you have applied for mitigating circumstances with exceptional evidence. This makes Imperial one of the most restrictive medical schools for resit applicants.

Is Imperial College London good for international students?

Yes, Imperial is an excellent choice for international students, with 74 overseas places available for the 6-year MBBS/BSc programme. However, the Pears Cumbria Graduate Entry programme is only open to Home students. International fees are approximately £53,700 per year.

How important are GCSEs for Imperial?

Very important. Imperial expects the majority of your GCSEs to be grades 9-7 (A*-A), including minimum Grade B in English Language and Grade 7 (A) in Mathematics and science subjects. While there's no formal GCSE point scoring system, strong GCSEs are expected alongside your A-Level and UCAT performance.

Why is Imperial's programme 6 years instead of 5?

Imperial's MBBS/BSc is a unique integrated programme where Year 4 is dedicated to completing a BSc degree. This research year allows students to develop scientific skills, conduct independent research, and graduate with dual qualifications. It reflects Imperial's status as a research-intensive university.

How can I improve my chances of getting into Imperial College London Medicine?

Focus on three areas: achieve strong academics (A*AA with excellent GCSEs), prepare intensively for the UCAT to score in the top percentiles, and develop meaningful reflections on your experiences that demonstrate insight into medicine. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.

Is Imperial College London a good medical school?

Yes, Imperial is consistently ranked among the top 10 medical schools globally. It offers exceptional research opportunities, world-class facilities, and clinical training across major London teaching hospitals. The integrated BSc year is particularly valuable for students interested in academic medicine or research careers.
