HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

Important: This programme is only open to students who have attended non-selective state education within a London borough since age 11. Applicants cannot have started or completed a degree before submitting their application.
KCL ESP Dentistry offers a specialist route into dental school with its own admissions criteria. This guide covers the entry requirements, eligibility, and application process for 2026 entry.
The King's College London Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme (ESP) is a 5-year BDS programme designed to provide additional academic and pastoral support for students from London state schools who may have faced barriers to accessing higher education.
Unlike foundation programmes that add an extra year, the ESP runs alongside the standard BDS programme with enhanced support throughout. Students benefit from additional tutorials, coaching, and study skills support while completing the same curriculum as direct entry students.
London Focus: This programme specifically targets students educated in London boroughs, recognising the unique challenges faced by students in the capital's state school system. You must list all schools attended since age 11 on your UCAS application.
Considering King's College London Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme? Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol™ coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system, from UCAT preparation to university selection to interview readiness. 93% of our students receive at least one offer. Find out how it works.

To be eligible for the KCL Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme, you must meet all of the following criteria:
K+ exception: Applicants on King's K+ Widening Participation programme are an exception — the London borough requirement is waived for them. Applicants who have attended a grammar school are not eligible, as grammar schools are selective.
You must list all schools that you have attended since age 11 on your UCAS application so that King's can verify your eligibility.
All applicants to KCL ESP Dentistry must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. You must have completed the UCAT before submitting your UCAS application.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Admissions Test | UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) |
| When to Sit | Before submitting UCAS application (typically July-September) |
| How UCAT is Used | Combined with other factors in application assessment. King's does not set a threshold UCAT score in any particular year |
| SJT (Situational Judgement Test) | Yes — taken into account when shortlisting |
"The KCL Enhanced Support Programme is a fantastic opportunity for London state school students who want to study dentistry at one of the UK's top dental schools. The enhanced support throughout the programme means you'll have additional help when you need it, while still achieving the same qualification as direct entry students. If you meet the eligibility criteria, this programme could be your pathway to King's."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Note on UCAT scores: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores from previous years may not directly apply to the current format. The competitiveness levels described above are based on relative performance within the applicant pool.
King's states that interviews are conducted remotely with a panel of two interviewers. In previous years, interviews took the form of in-person Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) with six interviewers, so check King's own guidance for the current cycle before you prepare.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Panel interview, conducted remotely (online) |
| Interviewers | Two interviewers on the panel (previous years used in-person MMIs with six interviewers) |
| What's Assessed | Communication, motivation, ethical reasoning, understanding of dentistry |
| Number of Stations | Not applicable — the current format is a single panel, not an MMI. Six-interviewer MMIs were used in previous years |
| Interview Period | December to March, with at least two weeks' notice via King's Apply |
| Mitigating Circumstances | "Fit to sit" — King's cannot take into account circumstances affecting your interview performance after the event |
| Personal Statement | Used in overall assessment of application |
Your personal statement is an important factor in your application. King's is looking for evidence of:

King's publishes these figures for the ESDP on its own entry requirements page, for the most recent cycle for which it has complete data.
| Metric | Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme (A206) |
|---|---|
| Applications received | Approximately 200 |
| Applicants interviewed | Approximately 40 |
| Offers made | Approximately 18 |
| UCAT cut-off | Not published — King's does not set a threshold UCAT score in any particular year for this programme |
| Decision timing | A small number of offers are released through the cycle; most interviewees are held until all interviews are done, with all decisions out by the UCAS deadline in May |
King's expects applicants to have undertaken some work experience demonstrating their commitment to dentistry:
Not Eligible
Applicants cannot have started or completed a degree before submitting their application. If you have a degree or are currently studying for one, you should consider the Graduate/Professional Entry Programme (A202) instead.
Considered
King's is able to consider applicants resitting their Level 3 qualifications for the first time, meaning A-Levels completed within three years. Applicants resitting for a second time (A-Levels completed within four years) are usually only considered where there are mitigating circumstances.
Not Eligible
This programme is only open to students who have attended London state schools. Students with Overseas fee status are ineligible to apply for this programme.
This needs care, because King's wording is easy to misread. The ESDP is King's contextual route into dentistry — the AAB offer is already two grades below the standard A205. On top of that, King's states it "does not make contextual offers for this programme, and all applicants will be required to meet the standard entry requirements", meaning there is no further reduction below AAB. Contextual information is still used, but to rank you for interview rather than to lower your offer. See Contextual & Widening Participation Offers below.
Yes, applicants can apply to both the standard Dentistry BDS (A205) and the Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme (A206) via the UCAS application system, if they wish to maximise their chances of studying at King's. However:
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
King's is unusual, and the unusual bit catches people out. Its university-wide contextual offer — worth up to two A-Level grades — explicitly excludes medicine and dentistry. Instead, King's runs two separate degrees for widening participation applicants: the Extended Medical Degree Programme on the medicine side, and the Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme (ESDP, A206) on the dentistry side. This page is about the ESDP. It is the contextual route.
If you qualify, King's does not adjust your application — it puts you on a different degree, with a lower published offer and a smaller field to compete against. You end up with the identical BDS qualification.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| A two-grade lower published offer | AAB — grade A in Biology or Chemistry, plus grade B in one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology — against A*AA with grade A in both for the standard A205 BDS. |
| You compete only against other ESDP applicants | Applications are ranked within the ESDP pool on GCSE/IGCSE performance, UCAT score and contextual information. You are never set against the national A205 field. |
| A far shorter queue | In the most recent cycle for which King's has complete data: roughly 200 applications, about 40 interviews and about 18 offers. The standard A205 is an order of magnitude more competitive. |
| No UCAT threshold to clear | King's does not set a threshold UCAT score in any particular year for this programme. Your UCAT contributes to your rank; it does not sit as a gate in front of you. |
| Contextual information is reviewed twice | Once in the initial ranking, and again at the stage where King's reviews grades, personal statement and reference: "further contextual consideration and eligible mitigating circumstances are reviewed to finalise interview eligibility." |
| Enhanced support once you are in | The same five-year curriculum as the standard BDS, with a dedicated enhanced-support personal tutor and additional study-skills teaching. Identical qualification at the end. |
| You can hold both applications | You may apply to A205 and A206 in the same UCAS cycle. Each is assessed independently — but it uses two of your four dentistry choices. |
For a side-by-side comparison, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.
| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| Home (UK) students | £10,050 (expected) |
| Overseas | Not applicable — students with Overseas fee status are ineligible for this programme |
King's has not yet published a 2027/28 home fee. Its tuition fees page states only that "home fees for students based in the UK are set at £9,790 for new students starting in September 2026". The £10,050 above is the maximum regulated undergraduate fee in England for 2027/28, which King's charges — but confirm it with King's directly before you budget on it.
The 5-year Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme follows the same curriculum as the standard BDS programme, with additional support throughout:
Applying to dental school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK dental schools and how they compare, see the UK Dental Schools hub page.
You must have attended only non-selective state education within a London borough since age 11. This means from the start of secondary school onwards. You need to list all schools attended since age 11 on your UCAS application.
No, applicants cannot have started or completed a degree before submitting their application. If you have a degree, consider the Graduate/Professional Entry Programme (A202) instead.
Yes, you will receive the same BDS degree as students on the standard programme. The only difference is the additional support provided throughout your studies.
Yes, you can apply to both the standard BDS (A205) and the ESP (A206) if you meet the eligibility criteria for both. Each application is assessed independently.
Grammar schools are selective, so if you attended a grammar school at any point since age 11, you would not be eligible for this programme. The programme is specifically for non-selective state schools.
Most applicants treat the dental school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
