HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

About Kent and Medway Medical School

Considering Kent Medway Medicine? Here's a complete breakdown of entry requirements, admissions criteria, and the application process for 2026 entry.

Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) is a partnership between the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University. Established in 2020, KMMS was created to address the shortage of doctors in the South East of England and to provide medical education in a region that previously had no medical school.

The school has a strong focus on community-based medicine, primary care, and the health needs of the Kent and Medway population. Students benefit from placements across multiple NHS trusts in the region, gaining diverse clinical experience.

Entry Routes at a Glance

Route UCAS Code Length Standard offer
BM BS Medicine A100 5 years AAA or AAB in any order (Group A, set by your school's average attainment); AAB (Group B); 2:1 for final-year undergraduates

KMMS runs no gateway, foundation or extended-year medicine programme, and no separate graduate-entry course — graduates apply to the same five-year A100 and are handled in Group D. Verified October 2026 on the KMMS 2027 entry requirements page.

Kent Medway Medicine Entry Requirements

A-Level Requirements

Qualification Requirement
A-Level Grades AAA or AAB in any order (unless specified) in three A-Levels for Group A applicants (applying before their A-Level results); AAB for Group B applicants (applying after their A-Level results)
Required Subjects Must include Chemistry and/or Biology. If both Chemistry and Biology are not offered, there must be one other from Physics, Maths, Psychology or Computer Science
Third Subject Any subject accepted (excluding General Studies)
Contextual Offers KMMS operates a "contextualising everyone" policy, comparing an applicant's attainment relative to their school's average. KMMS states it does not use postcodes or family data to determine lower offers

Important: KMMS does not require both Chemistry and Biology. One of the two is enough, provided your third A-Level is Physics, Maths, Psychology or Computer Science. The grade profile you are held to depends on which applicant group you fall into (A–E), which is determined by whether you apply before or after your A-Level results, and whether you are a graduate or an international applicant.

GCSE Requirements

  • At least 5 GCSEs at Grade 9–6 (A*–B), including the subjects below
  • Grade 9–6 (B) minimum in English Language and Mathematics
  • Grade 9–6 (B) minimum in Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or GCSE Double Science plus one other subject)

International Baccalaureate

  • 36 points overall
  • 6, 6, 6 at Higher Level including Chemistry and Biology

UCAT Requirements

Aspect Detail
UCAT Required Yes
Cut-off Score Not published. KMMS applies a UCAT threshold at stage 2a but does not publish the score, and it may differ between applicant groups
How It's Used Part of overall application scoring
SJT Band Band 3 required for Groups A and C (school-leaver applicants); Band 2 required for Groups B and D (post-A-Level and graduate applicants)

The SJT requirement is stricter for post-A-Level and graduate applicants: Groups B and D must achieve Band 2 or better, where school-leaver applicants in Groups A and C need Band 3 or better.

"KMMS is a great option for students who want to train in the South East without the intensity of London. As a newer school, they're particularly focused on innovation in medical education and building strong community links. The smaller intake means more personalised attention."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.

Interview Process

Aspect Detail
Format MMI (Multiple Mini Interview) followed by a group station
Number of Stations 6 short stations plus a 40-minute group station
Duration 7 minutes per short station, with 3-minute intervals between stations; the group station runs for 40 minutes
Station Types Data handling, problem analysis, situational judgement, role-play, task, and values-based
Interview Period January to March

These are the station types and timings KMMS has published for a recent cycle. KMMS explicitly does not commit to the same number or type of stations from year to year, so treat the structure as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Application Statistics

Metric Figure
Annual Applications Not published by KMMS — around 2,000 is a commonly quoted estimate
Places Available Not published for 2027 entry — around 140 is a commonly quoted estimate
Application to Place Ratio Not published — roughly 14:1 on the estimates above
UCAT Threshold (2025-6) Total score 1850 or above (the 47th centile), plus SJT band 3 or above for school leavers and band 2 or above for graduates. KMMS states it "does not necessarily commit to the same, or similar threshold" for 2027 entry.
Interview Invitations Not published by KMMS

KMMS also requires all interviewees to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which is part of why published interview and outcome data is thin for this school.

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

KMMS does it differently, and the difference matters. Most schools attach a flag to some applicants. KMMS re-scores everybody: it compares your attainment to your own school's average rather than to the national field. There is nothing to apply for, nothing to declare, and no postcode test — but there is a real consequence, which is that a strong candidate from a high-performing school is actively disadvantaged relative to absolute-grades admissions.

They Might Apply To You If…

  • You are in Group A — a pre-A-level or pre-IB applicant with GCSEs from an English school for which KMMS has data
  • You are in Group B — post-A-level or post-IB, or a pre-graduate in the final year of a Bachelor's degree
  • You studied at a school in Wales — public data is used to contextualise you too
  • You attended an independent school — you are contextualised against your school's publicised GCSE and A-level achievements

There is nothing to apply for. Contextualisation is automatic and applies to every applicant in Groups A and B — it is not an opt-in scheme and you do not self-declare. Applicants from Scotland and Northern Ireland, home-educated applicants and those with no reliable school data are handled in Group C and scored instead.

What It Gets You

How it helps What that means for you
You are ranked on relative, not absolute, attainment After the UCAT threshold is passed, applicants are ranked for interview on attainment relative to their own school's average at GCSE and A-level. KMMS states the practical consequence directly: "high UCAT scorers will not necessarily be selected over lower scorers who still pass the threshold". If you did well at a school where few people do, that counts here in a way it does not elsewhere.
Your offer level is set by your school's performance "We determine the A-level offer for successful group A applicants by the A-level average attainment of their current school." The two published Group A offer levels are AAA or AAB, in any order — so applicants from lower-attaining schools can be held to the lower of the two. KMMS does not publish the exact school-average cut-off that decides which applicant gets which.
Achieved grades, not predictions "KMMS does not use predicted grades at all" in selection. If your predicted grades undersell you — which disproportionately happens to applicants from lower-attaining schools — that cannot hurt you here. GCSE resits are accepted towards the minimum requirements, provided final results are in before you apply.
A generous, published UCAT threshold KMMS uses UCAT as a pass/fail gate rather than a ranking tool. In 2025-6 the threshold was a total score of 1850 or above — the 47th centile — plus SJT band 3 or above for school leavers (band 2 or above for graduates). The centile is the stable figure; treat the raw number as cycle-specific, and note KMMS "does not necessarily commit to the same, or similar threshold" for 2027 entry.

What It Does Not Get You

  • No postcode, deprivation or free-school-meals flag exists. KMMS says it plainly: "We do not use postcodes or family data to determine lower offers for applicants." School average performance is the only contextual measure.
  • Post-A-level (Group B) applicants get no offer reduction. "Post A-level applicants in group B are not affected, and their requirement is AAB." They are still contextualised for shortlisting, but the offer level is fixed.
  • Postgraduate applicants are not contextualised at all — they are scored, and may be required to sit additional online assessments. The same applies to anyone with no reliable school performance data.
  • There is no gateway, foundation or extended-year medicine programme at KMMS.
  • No guaranteed interview is published for any applicant group.
  • If you went to a high-performing school, this works against you. That is the honest reading of a relative-attainment system, and it is worth factoring into where you put your four choices.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK) £10,050 — the statutory England cap for 2027/28. KMMS has not yet published a 2027/28 figure of its own; its published 2026/27 rate was £9,790, in line with that year's cap.
International 2027/28: TBC. KMMS publishes £49,700 for 2026/27 and reserves the right to increase fees to the maximum permitted level. For continuing students, fees rise by no more than RPI + 3% each year.

Funding and Support

Aspect Detail
KMMS Financial Support Package £1,000 per year of study for eligible students — the published criteria include a household income of £35,000 or less, full-time registration and payment of the maximum tuition fee. Check the current year's criteria before relying on it.
Tuition Fee Loan Covers the full cost of tuition and is paid directly to the university. If you already hold a degree-level qualification you will not be entitled to a Tuition Fee Loan, though you remain eligible for a Maintenance Loan.
Lifelong Learning Entitlement From January 2027, students who normally live in England apply through the LLE. Under it, students taking medicine as a second degree can access tuition fee and maintenance support for the years not covered by the NHS.

Kent Medway Medicine FAQ

Is KMMS a good medical school despite being new?

KMMS has full GMC accreditation and follows the same standards as all UK medical schools. Being new can be an advantage - smaller cohorts, modern curriculum, and enthusiastic faculty. Early graduates have performed well in Foundation Programme applications.

Where will I do my clinical placements?

Placements are across Kent and Medway at various hospitals and GP practices. This provides diverse experience in both urban and more rural settings.
