HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

About King's College London Medicine

Considering King's College Medicine? Here's a complete breakdown of entry requirements, admissions criteria, and the application process for 2027 entry.

King's College London (KCL) is one of the UK's most established and respected medical schools, with a history dating back to 1831. The GKT School of Medical Education brings together Guy's, King's College, and St Thomas' Hospitals, providing students with clinical training across some of London's busiest and most diverse healthcare settings.

KCL offers three different routes into medicine, each designed for different types of applicants. The school is known for its research excellence, central London location, and the breadth of clinical experience available through its NHS partner trusts in southeast England.

Considering King's College London? Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol™ coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system, from UCAT preparation to university selection to interview readiness. 93% of our students receive at least one offer. Find out how it works.

Entry Routes at a Glance

Route UCAS Code Length Entry requirement
Medicine MBBS (standard) A100 5 years (6 with an optional intercalated BSc) A*AA with grade A in both Biology and Chemistry. No contextual offers.
Extended Medical Degree Programme (the widening participation route) A101 6 years (7 with an optional intercalated BSc) ABB with grade A in Biology or Chemistry and B in the other. Home fee status, non-selective state education since age 11, no prior degree.
Medicine (Graduate/Professional Entry) MBBS A102 4 years Graduate entry, Home fee status only. No contextual offer or WP scheme published.

Note the code: at King's the widening participation medicine route is A101, not A104 or A102 as at some other schools. Applying to A100 when you are eligible for A101 is the most common and most expensive mistake made at this school.

King's College Medicine Entry Requirements

The following requirements apply to the standard 5-year Medicine MBBS programme (A100). For Graduate Entry and Extended programmes, see the dedicated pages linked above.

A-Level Requirements

Qualification Requirement
A-Level Grades A*AA including Chemistry and Biology
Required Subjects Grade A in both Chemistry and Biology
Not Accepted General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills
Science Practicals Practical endorsement required (except private candidates)

Contextual offers: King's does not make contextual offers for the A100 programme. Applicants eligible for contextualised admissions are directed to the Extended Medical Degree Programme MBBS (A101) instead.

GCSE Requirements

  • Grade 6/B minimum in English Language
  • Grade 6/B minimum in Mathematics

International Baccalaureate

  • 38 points overall OR 19 from three Higher Levels
  • Grade 6 in Higher Level Biology and Chemistry required
  • Must also sit the UCAT

Graduate Applicants

  • Bioscience graduates: Minimum 2:1 with Biology and Chemistry content
  • Other graduates: Minimum 2:1 plus A-Level grades AA in Biology and Chemistry
  • All must meet GCSE requirements and sit the UCAT

UCAT Requirements

All applicants must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. King's does not use a specific cut-off score. Instead, they use a holistic approach that considers your overall UCAT performance alongside other factors.

Aspect Detail
Cut-off Score Not published. King's states: "King's does not have a threshold UCAT score in any particular year, as it is dependent upon the range of scores received each cohort."
Contextual / widening participation UCAT threshold Not published — there is no threshold to lower. Widening participation indicators feed the shortlisting ranking instead.
How UCAT is Used Overall score averaged across subtests given more weight than individual subtest scores
SJT Consideration Not used — King's states the Situational Judgement Test is not taken into account when shortlisting
UCAT Weighting Not published as a weight. King's states applications are "initially ranked using UCAT performance, GCSE grades and widening participation indicators" but does not publish how much each is worth.

"King's is one of the medical schools where your UCAT score matters, but it's not the only thing that matters. They look at the whole picture: your GCSEs, your UCAT, and any contextual factors. This means a strong GCSE profile can help compensate for a slightly lower UCAT, and vice versa. It's about getting the overall combination right."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Selection Criteria Weighting

  • UCAT Score: used in the initial ranking. Weighting not published.
  • GCSEs: used in the initial ranking. Weighting not published.
  • Widening participation indicators: used in the initial ranking. Weighting not published.

Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.

Interview Process

King's uses a traditional panel interview format rather than MMI stations. No offers are made without an interview.

Aspect Detail
Format Panel interview with two interviewers
Duration Not published. King's does not state an interview length on the pages we could read.
Delivery Interviews are conducted remotely (online) during the current admissions cycle
Interview Period November to May
Number of MMI stations Not applicable — King's does not use an MMI circuit for A100
Interview scoring and weighting Not published by King's
What's Assessed Communication skills, ethical reasoning, suitability for medicine

Interview Topics May Include

  • Ethical dilemmas in healthcare
  • Analysis of health news and current NHS issues
  • Data interpretation scenarios
  • Role-play communication exercises
  • Reflection on work experience
  • Motivation for medicine

Important: King's operates a "fit-to-sit" policy, meaning mitigating circumstances are not considered for interview performance on the day.

Application Statistics

King's does not publish A100 admissions statistics on its course or admissions pages. We have removed the figures that previously appeared here rather than keep publishing numbers we cannot trace to King's own source.

Metric Figure
Annual applications Not published by King's
Total places Not published by King's
Interview invitations Not published by King's
Post-interview success rate Not published by King's
Average UCAT of interviewed applicants Not published. King's states: "King's does not have a threshold UCAT score in any particular year, as it is dependent upon the range of scores received each cohort."

If you want hard numbers to plan around, apply that energy to a school that publishes them — Dundee, Cambridge and Plymouth all do. At King's, plan around the stated process rather than a historic cut-off.

Work Experience Requirements

King's expects applicants to have undertaken some form of relevant experience. While there is no strict minimum hours requirement, they are looking for evidence of:

  • Work experience in a caring environment
  • Clinical observation in a medical setting (where possible)
  • Interaction with the general public (e.g., pharmacy, retail, hospitality)
  • Demonstration of communication skills and teamwork

If clinical experience was not possible (e.g., due to COVID-19 restrictions or access barriers), King's will consider alternative evidence of commitment and understanding of healthcare.

Special Applicant Categories

Do They Accept Resits?

Considered with caution

King's will consider applicants who have retaken qualifications, though first-time achievers may be viewed more favourably. Second resits are only considered with significant mitigating circumstances.

Do They Accept Re-applicants?

Yes

Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. You will need to demonstrate how your application has improved since your previous attempt.

International Students

A100 only

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

King's is a special case, and misreading it costs applicants a UCAS choice every year. King's does not make contextual offers on the standard MBBS. Its university-wide contextual scheme — worth up to two A-Level grades — explicitly excludes Medicine and the whole Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences faculty. What King's does instead is route widening participation applicants to separate programmes with their own, lower entry requirements. Those are UCAS codes you apply to directly, not adjustments applied to A100.

They Might Apply To You If…

For the Extended Medical Degree Programme (EMDP) MBBS, UCAS A101 — the medicine route:

  • You have attended only non-selective state education since age 11 (grammar school attendance rules you out)
  • You have not started or completed a degree
  • You have Home fee status
  • And you meet at least one widening participation criterion: eligible for free school meals; home postcode in an area of high deprivation; completed the King's K+ programme; or care-experienced

For the Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme (ESDP) BDS — the dentistry route, which has a geographic restriction the EMDP does not:

  • You have attended only non-selective state education within a London borough since age 11 (K+ widening participation students are the exception to the London borough rule)
  • You have not started or completed a degree
  • You have Home fee status — Overseas fee status applicants are ineligible

If you meet those conditions, King's will not lower the grades it asks of you on A100. What it will do is point you at a different, longer programme with a substantially lower entry requirement — and King's says so directly: "applicants eligible for contextualised admissions should consider applying to our Extended Medical Degree Programme MBBS (A101)".

What It Gets You

How it helps What that means for you
A three-grade lower entry requirement, via the EMDP (A101) ABB with grade A in either Biology or Chemistry and grade B in the other, against A*AA with grade A in both for the standard five-year MBBS. That is the single most valuable fact on this page.
Stage 1 spread over two years instead of one The EMDP is a six-year MBBS (seven with an optional intercalated BSc). The first stage is taught over two years with additional academic tuition and pastoral support — you are given more time for the hardest transition, not just a lower bar at the door.
An identical degree at the end From Stage 3 onwards EMDP students meet the same pass marks as everyone else and graduate with an identical MBBS. There is no "lesser" qualification.
For dentistry: one grade lower, via the ESDP BDS AAB with grade A in Biology or Chemistry plus grade B in one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology, against A*AA for the standard BDS — plus enhanced support throughout.
Widening participation indicators in shortlisting Even on the mainstream courses, King's states for Medicine that "Applications are initially ranked using UCAT performance, GCSE grades and widening participation indicators", and for Dentistry that contextual information is used "to gain a more complete picture of each application". King's does not publish how much weight those indicators carry.

What It Does Not Get You

  • No contextual offer on the standard MBBS. King's states: "Students applying for our MBBS courses or courses in the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences are not eligible for contextual offers." The university-wide two-grade reduction does not apply here.
  • No contextual offer on the EMDP either. Eligible applicants must still meet the full ABB EMDP requirement — the lower grades are the adjustment, not a starting point for further reduction.
  • No contextual offer on the ESDP. Same logic: AAB is the requirement.
  • Nothing for graduate entry. Medicine (Graduate/Professional Entry) MBBS publishes no contextual offer or widening participation scheme; applications are "initially ranked using UCAT performance".
  • Grammar school attendance disqualifies you from both the EMDP and the ESDP, however disadvantaged your other circumstances.
  • Starting a degree disqualifies you from both programmes.
  • No lower UCAT threshold, because King's publishes no UCAT threshold at all.
  • The ESDP is London-only unless you came through K+. A non-selective state school in Manchester qualifies you for the EMDP but not for the ESDP.

For how every other school handles this, see see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK) £10,050 — the statutory England cap for 2027/28. King's has not published its own 2027/28 figure; its central tuition fees page still states "£9,790 for new students starting in September 2026". Confirm before you apply.
International (A100) £60,200 per year, provisional — see the note below. A deposit of £5,000 is required.
Graduate Entry Medicine (A102) and EMDP (A101) Home fee status only — no international rate applies

A word on how we got these. King's renders its course fees in the browser rather than in the page itself, so there is no fee figure in the served HTML for us to read. The £60,200 international figure comes from the data payload behind the Medicine MBBS fees page, which is the field that page actually displays; a second, older value of £53,000 sits on the course record in the same payload. Treat £60,200 as provisional and confirm it with King's in writing before you commit to anything. We would rather tell you that than print a confident number we cannot stand behind.

Course Structure

The MBBS programme is organised into three stages:

Stage 1: Foundation Year

Foundational biomedical and population sciences with early clinical integration. Students begin to understand the scientific basis of medicine while gaining exposure to clinical environments.

Stage 2: Systems-Based Learning

Integration of science and clinical practice through blocks organised around the human life-cycle and common pathological processes. Increased clinical exposure and application of knowledge.

Stage 3: Clinical Practice

Practice-oriented learning with rotations across specialties. Includes elective opportunities for study abroad and quality improvement projects.

Intercalation

An optional intercalated BSc is available between Stages 2 and 3, allowing students to explore a subject in greater depth across King's multi-faculty offerings.

Location and Teaching Sites

Students train at some of London's most renowned teaching hospitals:

  • Guy's Hospital - Major teaching hospital in London Bridge
  • King's College Hospital - Denmark Hill, South London
  • St Thomas' Hospital - Westminster, opposite the Houses of Parliament
  • District General Hospitals - Various sites across southeast England
  • GP Practices - Over 350 practices across the region

"The clinical exposure at King's is exceptional. You're training in central London hospitals that see everything. The diversity of patients and conditions you'll encounter is hard to match anywhere else in the UK. It's intense, but it prepares you incredibly well for life as a doctor."

King's College Medicine FAQ

What UCAT score do I need for King's College London?

There is no number to hit. King's averages your score across the subtests and considers it alongside your GCSEs and widening participation indicators, and states that it "does not have a threshold UCAT score in any particular year, as it is dependent upon the range of scores received each cohort". It does not publish the average score of interviewed applicants either. Focus on performing consistently well across all sections.

Does King's use MMI or panel interviews?

King's uses a traditional panel interview format rather than an MMI circuit. It covers ethical scenarios, motivation, communication skills and reflection on your experiences, and is conducted remotely in the current admissions cycle. King's does not publish the interview length or how it is scored, so confirm the format in your invitation rather than relying on second-hand accounts.

Does King's College London consider your UCAT SJT band?

No. King's states that the Situational Judgement Test is not taken into account when shortlisting for Medicine (A100), so your SJT band will not count for or against your application.

Does King's make contextual offers for Medicine?

No. King's does not make contextual offers for the A100 programme. If you are eligible for contextualised admissions, King's advises you to consider the Extended Medical Degree Programme MBBS (A101) instead.

Can I apply to King's if I've resit my A-Levels?

Yes, but with caveats. King's will consider applicants who have retaken qualifications, though first-time achievers may be viewed more favourably. If you're considering a second resit, you'll need to demonstrate significant mitigating circumstances.

Is King's College London good for international students?

International students can apply to the 5-year Medicine MBBS (A100) programme. However, international students cannot defer entry and must pay significantly higher tuition fees. The Graduate Entry and Extended programmes are only open to Home fee status applicants.

How important are GCSEs for King's?

Important, but King's does not publish a weighting. It states only that applications are "initially ranked using UCAT performance, GCSE grades and widening participation indicators". Since you cannot know how the three are balanced, aim for a strong profile across all of them rather than betting on one compensating for another.

How can I improve my chances of getting into King's College London Medicine?

Focus on three areas: achieve strong academics (A*AA with excellent GCSEs), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT to score above average across all sections, and gain meaningful work experience that you can reflect on articulately. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.

Is King's College London a good medical school?

Yes, King's is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the UK and globally. It offers exceptional clinical exposure across Guy's, King's College, and St Thomas' Hospitals in central London. The diversity of patients and conditions you'll see is unmatched, and the research opportunities are world-class.
