Learn About Future DocA 1-year foundation programme for mature UK students without A-Levels, leading to BDS Dental Surgery
HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

Important: This programme is specifically designed for mature UK students who have been out of formal education for a number of years and do not have A-Levels. School leavers and A-Level students are not eligible and should apply to the standard Liverpool BDS programme (A200) instead.
Liverpool Foundation Dentistry offers a specialist route into dental school with its own admissions criteria. This guide covers the entry requirements, eligibility, and application process for 2027 entry.
The University of Liverpool Foundation to Dentistry (Year 0) programme is a 1-year course designed for mature UK students who wish to pursue a career in dentistry but do not have traditional A-Level qualifications. This programme provides an alternative route into the 5-year BDS Dental Surgery degree.
Upon successful completion of the Foundation year, students progress directly to Year 1 of the BDS programme, making the total time to qualification 6 years. This pathway recognises that mature students often bring valuable life experience and motivation, even without formal academic qualifications.
Considering University of Liverpool Foundation to Dentistry (Year 0)? Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol™ coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system, from UCAT preparation to university selection to interview readiness. 93% of our students receive at least one offer. Find out how it works.
The course is listed by Liverpool as Foundation to Dentistry (Year 0) under UCAS code 0AAW, with a start date of 27 September 2027 and a UK application deadline of 13 January 2027 (30 June 2027 for international applicants, though the course is in practice closed to visa-requiring students).
| Route | UCAS Code | Length | Entry requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation to Dentistry (Year 0) — the course this page covers | 0AAW | 6 years (Year 0 + 5-year BDS) | 5 GCSEs at grade 6/B including Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry (or dual/combined science). No A-Levels, no UCAT. |
| Dental Surgery BDS (standard entry) | A200 | 5 years | AAA including Chemistry and Biology, at first sitting after two years of study. UCAT required. |
| Foundation to Dental Therapy (Year 0) | Code not verified | Not verified | Liverpool runs a separate Foundation to Dental Therapy (Year 0) course. We could not verify its UCAS code in Liverpool's own source, so we are not printing one. |
| Qualification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Number of GCSEs | 5 GCSEs at Grade 6 (B) or above |
| Required Subjects | Maths, English Language, and Biology and Chemistry (or dual combined science) |
Liverpool Foundation Dentistry is specifically designed for:
No admissions test is required for the Liverpool Foundation programme. Unlike the standard Liverpool BDS programme which requires the UCAT, Foundation applicants are assessed based on their GCSEs, personal statement, and interview performance alone.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Admissions Test | Not required |
| UCAT | Not needed for Foundation programme |
| Selection Based On | GCSEs, personal statement, interview |
"Liverpool Foundation Dentistry is an excellent opportunity for mature students who didn't take the traditional A-Level route but have since developed a genuine passion for dentistry. The fact that no admissions test is required removes a significant barrier, but don't underestimate the importance of your personal statement and interview preparation. These carry substantial weight in the selection process."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
An interview is part of the selection process for this course. Liverpool does not publish the format, the number of stations or the assessment criteria for the Foundation (Year 0) route on its course pages, so we are not going to tell you it is an MMI circuit when the university does not say so. Ask Liverpool directly before you prepare.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Is there an interview? | Yes. Liverpool states that "applicants who have been rejected following an interview will not normally be considered again." |
| Format | Not published for the Foundation (Year 0) route |
| Number of stations | Not published |
| What's assessed | Not published as a scoring breakdown |
| One shot only | If you are rejected after interview, you will not normally be considered again in a later cycle. This is the single most important thing on this page: at Liverpool, a weak interview is not a dress rehearsal. |
| Multiple UCAS choices | Liverpool states it "will not consider applications from prospective students who have multiple UCAS applications for a variety of programmes, as this does not demonstrate a clear commitment." |
Liverpool publishes no station list for this route, so treat the following as general dental-school interview preparation rather than a Liverpool syllabus:
As a mature student, expect questions exploring why you want to become a dentist at this stage of your life, how your previous experience has prepared you, and how you will manage the academic demands of the course.

Liverpool expects Foundation applicants to demonstrate genuine commitment to dentistry and understanding of the profession. As a mature applicant, you should be able to show:
Quality of reflection is often more important than quantity of experience. Liverpool values mature applicants who can articulate clearly why dentistry is the right career for them at this point in their lives.
Not Accepted
This programme is only open to UK applicants. International students cannot apply to Liverpool Foundation Dentistry.
Not Eligible
School leavers and A-Level students cannot apply to this programme. If you have or are completing A-Levels, you should apply to the standard Liverpool BDS programme (A200) instead.
Considered
Unlike the equivalent Liverpool medicine foundation route, this one does not shut graduates out. Liverpool states: "Applicants with a previous degree but do not meet criteria for direct entry to the degree programme will be considered if they are returning to education following a break." If you have A-Levels or equivalent that would get you onto the standard BDS, apply there instead.
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
On this page, the course itself is the mechanism. Foundation to Dentistry (Year 0) is the widening-access route into Liverpool's BDS: it replaces A-Levels with GCSEs, removes the UCAT entirely, and adds a preparatory year. There is no further contextual offer stacked on top of it.
For this Foundation (Year 0) route:
Separately, for the standard five-year BDS (A200), Liverpool's university-wide contextual scheme applies if:
If you meet the Foundation criteria, Liverpool will consider you against a GCSE-based entry standard instead of A-Levels and will not ask you to sit the UCAT at all. If you meet the A200 contextual criteria, Liverpool may lower the grades it asks of you on the standard BDS instead.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| A-Levels replaced by GCSEs (this course) | Entry is 5 GCSEs at grade 6/B including Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry, against AAA including Chemistry and Biology at first sitting for direct BDS entry. If you have no A-Levels and no realistic way to get them, this is the only Liverpool dentistry route open to you. |
| No admissions test at all (this course) | The UCAT is not required for the Foundation route. The standard BDS requires it, and Liverpool notes that SJT Band 4 is uncompetitive there. Here, that whole hurdle disappears. |
| A preparatory year with small class sizes | Year 0 is taught at Carmel College, St Helens, about nine miles from the main campus, with small class sizes, before you join the BDS. |
| Automatic contextual reduction on the standard BDS (A200) | If you do have A-Levels and qualify on IMD decile 1–2 or care experience, Liverpool's BDS page states applicants "may automatically qualify for reduced entry requirements through our contextual offers scheme" — up to two grades below the standard offer, with no separate application. Liverpool publishes no dentistry-specific figure, so confirm the exact reduction. |
| Substantial scholarships and bursaries | Liverpool publishes several awards relevant to this cohort: the Cowrie Foundation Scholarship (up to £8,000 a year, UK students of Black African or Caribbean heritage with household income £25,000 or less); Nolan Scholarships (£5,000 a year for three years, Liverpool City Region, household income £25,000 or less, neither parent attended university); the Rigby Enterprise Award (£5,000 a year, household income £25,000 or less, eligible outreach programme); the ROLABOTIC Scholarship (£4,500 a year, household income £26,500 or less, first in family); the Care Leavers' Opportunity Bursary (£3,000 a year, 13+ weeks in local authority care since age 14, aged 28 or above on 1 September); the Estranged Students Bursary (£1,000 a year); the Young Adult Carer's Bursary (£1,000 a year, registered carer aged 18–25); and the Liverpool Bursary (up to £2,000 a year, household income below £35,000). Check each one's own eligibility — several carry age or course restrictions. |

| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| Home (UK, including Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland) — Foundation Year | £10,050 |
| Home (UK) — BDS Years 1–5 | £10,050 per year |
| International | Not applicable. Liverpool states: "This course is not available to international students who require a visa to study in the UK." |
Source: Liverpool's own Foundation to Dentistry (Year 0) course page, which states "The fees shown are for the academic year 2027/28". Tuition fee loans from Student Finance England cover the foundation year and the subsequent BDS years; if you already hold a degree, check your eligibility for funding a second one before you apply, because that is where this route most often falls apart financially. Liverpool also notes that Home students who have lived outside the UK may be required to pay the international rate, so complete the fee status questionnaire.
The Foundation year provides the scientific and academic foundation needed to succeed on the BDS programme. You will study biology, chemistry, and other sciences at a level equivalent to A-Level and beyond, preparing you for the rigours of dental school.
Upon successful completion of the Foundation year, you progress to Year 1 of the 5-year BDS Dental Surgery programme alongside students who entered via the standard route. The BDS programme follows the standard Liverpool curriculum with early clinical exposure and patient contact.
Applying to dental school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK dental schools and how they compare, see the UK Dental Schools hub page.
No, school leavers and A-Level students are specifically excluded from this programme. If you have or are completing A-Levels, you should apply to the standard Liverpool BDS programme (A200) instead. This Foundation route is designed for mature students who did not take the traditional academic pathway.
No, there is no admissions test required for the Foundation programme. Selection is based on your GCSEs, personal statement, and interview performance. This is different from the standard BDS route which does require the UCAT.
You need 5 GCSEs at Grade 6 (B) or above, to include Maths, English Language, and Biology and Chemistry (or dual combined science). These are the minimum requirements, check the university website for the most current information.
The standard BDS programme at Liverpool is 5 years in duration. Upon successful completion, you will graduate with a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) degree.
There is no specific age limit. The programme is designed for mature students who have been out of formal education for a number of years. Liverpool welcomes applications from career changers of all ages who meet the eligibility criteria.
The Foundation programme is designed for those without A-Levels. If you already have a degree, you may not be the intended applicant for this route. Contact Liverpool admissions directly to clarify your eligibility, or consider the standard BDS programme if you have A-Levels or equivalent qualifications.

Most applicants treat the dental school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
