HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

| Qualification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| A-Level Grades | AAA including Biology and Chemistry |
| Required Subjects | Biology and Chemistry essential |
| Qualification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Highers + Advanced Highers | AAAAA at Higher plus AB at Advanced Higher including Biology or Chemistry |
| Alternative | If offering only one of Biology/Chemistry at Advanced Higher, a grade A is required. If offering only one of Higher Chemistry and Biology, the other must be taken in final year at Higher plus Advanced Higher in the first, achieving A grades in both. |
| Additional Requirements | English and Mathematics at grade 2 Standard Grade (or Intermediate 2 equivalent) |
Newcastle has relatively flexible GCSE requirements:
All applicants to Newcastle Dentistry must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. The UCAT score is used alongside academic achievement to determine which applicants are invited to interview.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Admissions Test | UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) |
| Cut-off Score | Not published in advance. "The UCAT threshold may differ in each admissions cycle as it is dependent on the scores achieved by those applicants who apply to our Dental School in the current cycle." Newcastle does publish the figures after each cycle — see the table below. |
| How UCAT is Used | Academic screening happens first. Once you clear it, "academic achievement is not considered further" — extra A-levels or A* grades give you nothing. Applicants are then ranked on UCAT alone until the interview places are filled. |
| Widening Participation | A separate, lower contextual threshold is published each year. "The UCAT score required may vary depending on the route of entry, e.g., PARTNERS or Widening Participation applicants." |
| UCAT Exemption | Only where a test centre cannot accommodate a disability or particular need. Evidence must reach the university by 30 November. |
Newcastle Dental School is one of the few schools that publishes both its standard and its contextual cut-off. The gap between the two columns is the actual value of a widening participation flag here.
| Entry Year | Standard cut-off | Contextual cut-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 2690 | 2600 |
| 2023 | 2790 | 2690 |
| 2024 | 2680 | 2600 |
| 2025 | 2800 | 2770 |
These are old-scale figures. All UCAT figures in this table are on the pre-2026 scale, which was marked out of 3,600. The UCAT dropped Abstract Reasoning for 2026 entry onwards and is now marked out of 2,700, so these numbers are not comparable with your own score. As a rough guide, multiply an old-scale figure by 0.75 to get the current-scale equivalent. Newcastle's own caveat: "UCAT recalibrates scores each year, so your score is not directly comparable with previous years. We cannot predict our UCAT score. It depends on the average score of applicants that apply to us." Abstract Reasoning was also removed from the UCAT in 2025, dropping the maximum total from 3,600 to 2,700, so these figures are not comparable with a 2026 or 2027 score at all.
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applications per place | Not published on the course page. Newcastle publishes an "Overview of Application Numbers and UCAT Thresholds" document, linked from the A206 page. |
| Interview invitations | Not published |
| UCAT cut-off for 2027 entry | Not published in advance — set after applications close |
| Internal transfer places from BSc Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences | A maximum of two per year, requiring a Stage 1 average of 75% with all module grades above 65% |
"Newcastle is a great choice for students from widening participation backgrounds thanks to their PARTNERS programme, which for dentistry reduces the offer by two grades, from AAA to ABB. The dental school has a strong community focus and provides excellent clinical exposure throughout the course. The personal statement is used in the application process, so make sure you put effort into demonstrating your commitment to dentistry."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Note on UCAT scores: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores from previous years may not directly apply to the current format. The competitiveness levels described above are based on relative performance within the applicant pool.
Newcastle uses a semi-structured panel interview for their dental school admissions — not MMIs. It is conducted online by two admissions selectors from the School of Dental Sciences, lasts approximately 20 minutes, and usually takes place between February and March. Interview times are released online for candidates to select, so book early.
At the end of the interview each selector grades you independently, against predetermined criteria across six domains:
Candidates unsuccessful at the shortlisting stage are normally informed by March.

Newcastle expects applicants to have explored dentistry as a career and to demonstrate understanding of the profession.
Limited
GCSE resits are accepted. For A-Level qualifications, Newcastle only accepts resits from candidates who have previously applied to Newcastle Dental School. Resits can be taken over a maximum of two exam sittings, and Newcastle asks for one grade higher than the offer you would otherwise have received — so A*AA against the usual AAA offer for BDS. This is a unique policy: you must have applied before to be considered with A-Level resits.
Yes
Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. You should demonstrate how your application has improved and show continued commitment to dentistry.
Accepted
International students can apply to the BDS programme. International fees apply and places may be limited. Check the university website for current international fee information.
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
Newcastle's main route is the PARTNERS Supported Entry Route. There are two parts to qualifying.
You must meet all of these:
And at least one of these:
THE DEADLINE THAT CATCHES PEOPLE OUT
PARTNERS needs a separate application through the Newcastle Portal, in addition to UCAS. For Dentistry A206 and Medicine A100 the deadline is 22 October — more than three months earlier than the 29 January deadline that applies to other Newcastle courses. Miss it and you lose the route entirely for that cycle. You must also make Newcastle your firm UCAS choice, and fully attend and complete the PARTNERS Academic Summer School.
If you meet those conditions, Newcastle will lower the grades it asks of you by two, and apply a lower UCAT threshold when deciding who to interview.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| A two-grade lower offer | ABB instead of AAA for BDS Dental Surgery. (BSc Dental Therapy drops from ABB to BBC, with at least a B in Biology required.) The School of Dental Sciences Admissions Policy 2027 states the reduction explicitly. |
| A lower UCAT threshold | This is the part that matters most at Newcastle, because once you clear the academic screen, selection for interview is on UCAT alone. Published history: 2022 entry 2690 standard / 2600 contextual; 2023 entry 2790 / 2690; 2024 entry 2680 / 2600; 2025 entry 2800 / 2770. |
| A free week-long academic summer school | Part of the deal rather than a bonus — the PARTNERS offer is conditional on completing it. You also get ongoing support during the degree. |
| Realising Opportunities as an alternative route | Participants in the national Realising Opportunities programme are considered through that route. All applicants still need valid UCAT scores. |
| Contextual data used without an application | Newcastle also takes account of contextual information generally: "In order to widen access and encourage participation in Dentistry by students from all backgrounds, we take account of contextual information, and the threshold may vary for applicants who fulfil certain criteria." |
Every school does this differently, and the differences are worth knowing before you build your shortlist — see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.
| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| Home (UK) | £10,050 |
| International | £49,000 |
Both figures are published by Newcastle on the A206 course page under the heading "Tuition fees for academic year 2027-2028", shown as the Year 1 full-time rate. Newcastle adds: "Our 2027/28 full-time undergraduate fees for home-fee paying students are £10,050… As a general principle, you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year of your course, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation." EU, EEA and Swiss nationals with settled or pre-settled status normally pay the Home rate; those without normally pay the International rate. Newcastle does not band the international dentistry fee by pre-clinical and clinical years.
The BDS programme at Newcastle uses an integrated curriculum that combines scientific learning with clinical experience from early in the course:
Core biomedical sciences integrated with early clinical skills. Students learn anatomy, physiology, and basic dental sciences while beginning to develop clinical skills in simulation labs and phantom head facilities.
Increased patient contact and clinical experience. Students treat patients under supervision at Newcastle Dental Hospital, developing skills across all areas of dentistry including restorative, periodontics, and oral surgery.
Extensive clinical practice preparing students for independent practice. Students manage their own patient lists and complete comprehensive treatments, with community outreach placements providing additional experience.
Applying to dental school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK dental schools and how they compare, see the UK Dental Schools hub page.
Newcastle does not publish a cut-off in advance, because it is set by the scores of the applicants who actually apply each year. It does publish the figures afterwards, with separate standard and contextual thresholds: 2022 entry 2690 standard / 2600 contextual, 2023 entry 2790 / 2690, 2024 entry 2680 / 2600, 2025 entry 2800 / 2770. Those are on the old 3,600-mark scale; Abstract Reasoning was removed from the UCAT in 2025, so they are not directly comparable with a current score. What matters structurally is that once you clear the academic screen, selection for interview is on UCAT alone — so the UCAT is the single most important number in a Newcastle dentistry application.
Newcastle uses a semi-structured panel interview rather than MMIs. It is held online via Zoom with two admissions selectors from the School, who assess your communication skills, motivation for dentistry, and personal qualities through discussion and scenario-based questions.
GCSE resits are accepted. A-Level resits are only accepted from applicants who have previously applied to Newcastle Dental School, can be taken over a maximum of two exam sittings, and must be one grade higher than the standard offer — A*AA rather than AAA. If you haven't applied before, resit grades will not be considered.
Newcastle has relatively minimal GCSE requirements - just a pass grade in Mathematics and English. This makes it more accessible than some other dental schools that require specific grades in multiple subjects.
Yes, graduates with a 2:1 honours degree in any subject can apply to the standard 5-year BDS programme. Interestingly, Newcastle also accepts applicants with a pass in a dental therapy degree.
PARTNERS is Newcastle's widening participation programme. For BDS it offers a two-grade reduction on the standard offer, so ABB rather than AAA, plus a lower UCAT threshold and a free academic summer school that you must complete for the offer to stand. It needs a separate application through the Newcastle Portal by 22 October — three months earlier than for other Newcastle courses — and Newcastle must be your firm UCAS choice. It does not guarantee you an interview.
Focus on achieving strong academics (AAA including Biology and Chemistry), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT, and gain meaningful work experience. Your personal statement is used in the application process at Newcastle, so ensure it demonstrates genuine commitment to dentistry. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 15%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.
Most applicants treat the dental school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
