HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

Considering Sheffield Dentistry? Below is a complete breakdown of entry requirements, admissions criteria, and interview details for the 2026 application cycle.
The University of Sheffield School of Clinical Dentistry is one of the UK's premier dental schools, offering a comprehensive five-year BDS programme. Located in the vibrant city of Sheffield with excellent clinical facilities at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, students benefit from early patient contact and a supportive learning environment.
Sheffield is notable for offering an alternative entry route with an EPQ option, making it attractive to students who have completed independent research projects. The dental school has strong links with NHS practices across South Yorkshire and offers students extensive clinical experience throughout their training.

| Qualification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Standard Offer | AAA including Chemistry and Biology + pass in the practical element of any science A-Levels |
| Contextual Offer | AAB including Chemistry and Biology + pass in the practical element of any science A-Levels taken |
| Alternative Offer with EPQ | AAB (including AA in Chemistry and Biology) + B in Dentistry or health-related EPQ (EPQ and A-Levels must be taken in the same sitting) |
| Required Subjects | Chemistry and Biology essential |
| Qualification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Highers + Advanced Highers | AAAAB at Highers + AA in Chemistry and Biology at Advanced Higher |
Sheffield has specific GCSE requirements that are higher than many other dental schools:
All applicants to Sheffield Dentistry must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. The UCAT score is used alongside academic achievement to determine which applicants are invited to interview.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Admissions Test | UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) |
| Cut-off Score | No fixed cut-off score, but Phase 1 screening requires an average or above total score in the UCAT cognitive components |
| SJT Requirement | Bands 1 or 2 only — Phase 1 screening requires band 1 or 2 in the UCAT Situational Judgement Test, so band 3 is screened out |
| How UCAT is Used | Combined with academic performance for interview selection; at Phase 3 the UCAT cognitive component is used to prioritise applicants for interview |
| Validity | Results are valid for the current admissions cycle only. If you reapply the following cycle, you must resit the test. |
Sheffield publishes its screening in three named phases. Knowing the order matters, because your personal statement is not read at all unless you clear Phase 1.
| Phase | What happens |
|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Screened on academic record and UCAT. You need to meet the minimum academic requirements, score average or above on the UCAT cognitive components, and achieve band 1 or 2 in the SJT. "Personal statements and references are only read and evaluated for applicants who advance past Phase 1 screening." |
| Phase 2 | Trained staff assess your personal statement and academic reference for evidence of career exploration and relevant personal qualities and values. Only your original UCAS personal statement is considered. |
| Phase 3 | Sheffield aims to interview around 300 applicants, so the UCAT cognitive component is used to prioritise those who cleared Phase 2. |
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applications per year | Approximately 1,250 |
| Places available | 71 usually available on the BDS programme |
| Applications per place | Approximately 17.6 : 1 |
| Selection day invitations | Approximately 300 applicants each year |
| UCAT cut-off score | Not published as a number. Sheffield publishes the rule instead: average or above on the cognitive components at Phase 1, then ranked on the cognitive component at Phase 3. |
| Timeline | Screening October to December · interview invitations usually sent in January · selection days towards the end of January · outcomes by the end of March |
All figures above are published by Sheffield's School of Clinical Dentistry on its 2027-entry admissions and selection process page. Sheffield "make[s] offers to more applicants than there are places available", and operates a published reserve list policy.
"Sheffield is unique in offering an alternative entry route with the EPQ, which can be a real advantage if you've completed a health-related extended project. Their panel interview with a separate group task is also distinctive - make sure you practise both conversational interviews and group communication exercises."
- Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Note on UCAT scores: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores from previous years may not directly apply to the current format. The competitiveness levels described above are based on relative performance within the applicant pool.
Sheffield uses a semi-structured panel interview lasting up to 15 minutes, conducted by two members of academic staff and a senior dental student, alongside a separate group task assessing respect, teamwork and communication. All selection days take place on campus — the university does not offer online selection days.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Semi-structured panel interview with two members of academic staff and a senior dental student, plus a separate group task |
| Duration | Panel interview lasts up to 15 minutes |
| Location | On campus only — Sheffield does not offer online selection days |
| What's Assessed (interview) | Three named areas: career exploration (motivation for the profession and knowledge of current issues); personal qualities and communication skills (relevant experience, communication, personal qualities and values); and commitment to Sheffield (motivation for this specific programme and this university) |
| What's Assessed (group task) | Respect, teamwork and communication — assessed separately from the interview |
| Personal Statement | You are assessed at interview "with reference to the information you have provided in your personal statement" — so expect to be asked about it directly |
| Values-based recruitment | Sheffield recruits against the General Dental Council's standards for the Dental Team and the NHS Constitution. "Any applicant who displays values or behaviours that contravene this at any point during the application process, including at any point during the selection day, will have their application rejected." |
| Transfers | Not accepted from other dental schools, except in unforeseen exceptional circumstances with the approval of both programmes |

Sheffield expects applicants to have explored dentistry as a career and demonstrate understanding of the profession. Work experience is discussed as part of the interview process.
Yes, with conditions
Sheffield welcomes applications from those re-sitting A-levels, but applicants are normally expected to have obtained a minimum of grade B in each subject at the first sitting. Those who did not achieve this on their first attempt should only apply once they have achieved the necessary AAA grades. Access+ applicants and Access to Dentistry participants are measured against the alternative (AAB) offer instead: achieved results should normally be no lower than one grade per subject below it. Applicants who have taken more than two years to complete their A-levels are eligible to apply. Sheffield does not use AS grades when screening, and gives no additional merit for a fourth A-level or extra AS levels.
Yes
Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. You should demonstrate how your application has improved and show continued commitment to dentistry.
Accepted
International students can apply to the BDS programme. International fees apply and places may be limited. Check the university website for current international fee information.
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
Sheffield's scheme is called Access Sheffield, with the deprivation and disadvantage strand branded Access+. You must have home fee paying status to benefit from the contextual offer (separate terms apply if you are identified as a forced migrant), and meet one or more of:
There is also a separate, non-disadvantage strand: Sheffield makes contextual offers to students taking certain additional qualifications alongside three A-levels, including a relevant Extended Project Qualification and Core Maths. For BDS, the EPQ route is published on the course page as an alternative offer in its own right.
If you meet any of the Access Sheffield criteria, Sheffield will lower the grades it asks of you, and will give your application additional consideration both when it arrives and again when exam results come out.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| A lower A-level offer | The published Access Sheffield offer for Dental Surgery BDS is AAB including Chemistry and Biology, plus a pass in the practical element of any science A-level taken — against a standard AAA. It appears on the course page under the "Access Sheffield offer" tab. |
| A lower IB offer | 34 points with 6,5 (in any order) in Higher Level Chemistry and Biology, against 36 points with 6 in both for the standard offer. |
| A softer resit bar | Standard applicants are "normally expected to have obtained a minimum of grade B in each subject at the first sitting". For Access+ applicants and Access to Dentistry participants, achieved results "should normally be no lower than one grade per A Level subject below the entry requirements for our alternative offers" — measured against AAB, not AAA. |
| A conversation rather than a rejection | For Access to Dentistry participants whose first-sitting results fell more than one grade below the offer conditions, Sheffield "encourage[s] a direct conversation with the School and/or scheme coordinator before you apply" rather than a flat exclusion. |
| Extra consideration at results time | "If you miss the conditions of your offer, we'll give your application additional consideration to see whether you might still be sufficiently prepared for degree study with us." |
| Access+ support | Practical support alongside the offer, including a travel bursary for open days and offer-holder days. |
| Mostly automatic | Postcode and free school meal eligibility come to Sheffield directly from UCAS and the National Pupil Database. Care experience, estrangement and parenting responsibilities you should declare on your UCAS form, or afterwards through Sheffield's Access+ eligibility declaration. |
Every school does this differently, and the differences are worth knowing before you build your shortlist — see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.
| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| Home (UK) | £10,050 |
| International (Dentistry) | £55,000 per year, for five years |
Both figures are published by Sheffield. Home: "Tuition fees for new home undergraduate entrants in 2027-28 are £10,050." International: Sheffield quotes Medicine and Dentistry separately from its general overseas band, stating that for 2027/28 "Dentistry students will pay £55,000 per year for five years" (Medicine £51,380). The 2026/27 dentistry rate was £50,925. Sheffield confirms that "the tuition fee you pay in your first year will be the same for each year of your course", provided you stay on the same course. A tuition fee of £10,050 also applies to students from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man in 2027/28.
The annual fee includes items beyond tuition where they are a compulsory element of the course; Sheffield publishes a separate list of what is included and excluded.
The BDS programme at Sheffield uses an integrated curriculum that combines scientific learning with clinical experience from early in the course:
Core biomedical sciences integrated with early clinical skills. Students learn anatomy, physiology, and basic dental sciences while beginning to develop clinical skills in state-of-the-art simulation facilities.
Increased patient contact and clinical experience. Students treat patients under supervision at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, developing skills across all areas of dentistry.
Extensive clinical practice preparing students for independent practice. Students manage their own patient lists, complete comprehensive treatments, and gain experience in outreach settings across South Yorkshire.
Applying to dental school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK dental schools and how they compare, see the UK Dental Schools hub page.
Sheffield does not publish a specific UCAT cut-off score, but Phase 1 screening does require an average or above total score in the UCAT cognitive components together with band 1 or 2 in the Situational Judgement Test — band 3 is screened out. At Phase 3 the cognitive score is used to prioritise applicants for interview, so focus on achieving the best score possible across all sections.
Sheffield offers AAB (including AA in Chemistry and Biology) plus B in a Dentistry or health-related Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The EPQ and A-Levels must be taken in the same sitting to receive this alternative offer. This is a great option if you've completed a relevant independent research project.
Sheffield uses a semi-structured panel interview of up to 15 minutes, with two members of academic staff and a senior dental student, plus a separate group task assessing respect, teamwork and communication. Selection days are held on campus only. This is different from the MMI format used by many other dental schools, so make sure you prepare specifically for this interview style.
Yes, Sheffield welcomes applicants re-sitting A-levels, but you are normally expected to have obtained a minimum of grade B in each subject at your first sitting. If you didn't achieve this first time, you should wait until you have achieved the required AAA grades before applying.
Sheffield requires 6 GCSEs at grade 7/A or above, which must include English, Maths, and Science. This is a relatively high GCSE requirement compared to some other dental schools.
Focus on three areas: achieve strong academics (meeting the specific GCSE and A-Level requirements, or consider the EPQ alternative), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT to score competitively, and gain meaningful work experience that you can reflect on at interview. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 15%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.
Most applicants treat the dental school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
