Sheffield's Graduate Entry Medicine programme (A101) is exclusively for applicants from Widening Participation backgrounds. This is not a general graduate entry route. You must meet specific WP eligibility criteria to apply. If you do not meet these criteria, please consider the standard 5-year A100 programme instead.
HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

Sheffield GEM Medicine is a graduate entry programme with its own set of admissions criteria. This guide covers entry requirements, the application process, and what distinguishes this programme for 2027 entry.
Sheffield's Graduate Entry Medicine programme (A101) is a unique 4-year accelerated route into medicine designed specifically for graduates from Widening Participation (WP) backgrounds. With 24 places for home students annually, this highly competitive programme aims to increase diversity in the medical profession by supporting talented individuals whose backgrounds may have created barriers to entering medicine through traditional routes.
Unlike general graduate entry programmes at other medical schools, Sheffield's GEM has strict WP eligibility criteria. If you do not meet these criteria, you should consider applying to Sheffield's standard 5-year A100 programme or explore GEM programmes at other universities that accept all graduates.
Considering Sheffield Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM)? Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol™ coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system, from UCAT preparation to university selection to interview readiness. 93% of our students receive at least one offer. Find out how it works.
To apply for Sheffield's GEM programme, you must meet two or more of the following Widening Participation criteria. Sheffield's wording is "Applicants for MBChB Graduate Entry Medicine are required to meet two or more of the following criteria" — one is not enough.
There is a form and a hard deadline. Sheffield sends a short widening participation form after you submit your UCAS application, and it must be returned by 5pm on 31 October (the 2026-entry deadline was 5pm on Friday 31 October 2025). Applicants who receive offers must provide supporting evidence that they meet the criteria at registration.
"Sheffield's GEM programme is genuinely transformative for the right candidates. If you've overcome significant barriers to get where you are today, this programme recognises that journey. But be honest with yourself about whether you truly meet the criteria, if you don't, the standard A100 route is an excellent alternative, and Sheffield welcomes graduate applicants there too."

| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Degree Classification | Minimum 2:1 honours degree |
| Degree Subject | An appropriate life sciences subject. Sheffield publishes both an eligible and an ineligible list — Nursing, Psychology, Chemistry and Biology degrees are explicitly ineligible |
| Completion Status | Degree must be completed by start of course |
This is the most common trap on this programme. Sheffield explicitly states that the following degrees are not eligible for A101:
Note: A Biology or Chemistry degree does not qualify even though both are science subjects. If you are unsure whether your degree appears on Sheffield's eligible list, contact Sheffield admissions directly before applying.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Fee Status | Home fee status only |
| WP Criteria | Must meet two or more WP criteria (see above) |
| Admissions Test | UCAT required |
| Work Experience | Evidence of healthcare understanding expected |
All applicants to Sheffield GEM must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. The UCAT score is used as part of the shortlisting process.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| UCAT Required | Yes |
| Minimum UCAT Threshold | 1800/2700 for 2027 entry |
| How UCAT is Used | Contributes to shortlisting score alongside academic profile and WP status |
| SJT Consideration | Yes. Your SJT result is converted into a score out of five (1st quartile = 5, 2nd = 4, 3rd = 3, 4th = 2). For A101, Sheffield states that SJT performance is only reviewed if you are invited to interview |
Sheffield publishes a minimum UCAT score threshold of 1800 out of 2700 for 2027 entry. Clearing the threshold is only the first step: with 24 places for home students, aim as high as you can above it.

Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.
Sheffield GEM uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format, similar to the A100 programme.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) |
| Number of Stations | 7-8 stations |
| Duration per Station | Approximately 7 minutes each |
| Interview Period | December to March |
GEM applicants may be asked to reflect on how their background has shaped their perspective and motivation for medicine. Be prepared to discuss your experiences authentically.
"For Sheffield GEM interviews, authenticity is key. They want to understand your journey and how your experiences have prepared you for medicine. Don't shy away from discussing challenges you've faced, but also show how you've developed resilience, empathy, and determination. These qualities are exactly what they're looking for."

| Minimum UCAT threshold | 1800 / 2700 for 2027 entry. Sheffield also publishes the scores that were actually required to reach interview in recent years on the School of Medicine and Population Health site. |
| Interview station count | Not published. Home applicants attend an in-person MMI; international applicants are interviewed by online panel — though that does not apply here, since A101 is closed to international applicants. |
| Route | UCAS Code | Length |

Sheffield notes that if you also want to be considered for the five-year A100 you must apply to it separately through UCAS as a second choice — applying to A101 does not put you in the A100 pool.
With only 24 places for home students available, Sheffield GEM is highly competitive among eligible applicants. However, the pool of applicants is smaller than for general GEM programmes, as it is limited to those meeting WP criteria.
Sheffield expects GEM applicants to have relevant experience that demonstrates their understanding of and commitment to medicine. This is particularly important as you will be entering an accelerated programme.
Sheffield recognises that WP applicants may have faced barriers to accessing traditional clinical work experience. Alternative evidence of commitment and understanding of healthcare is accepted, including online work experience, caring responsibilities, and community roles.
The 4-year GEM programme is accelerated, building on your existing science degree knowledge:
Intensive foundation in clinical and biomedical sciences, integrated with early patient contact. Builds on your existing scientific knowledge while introducing clinical skills.
Systems-based learning with increasing clinical exposure. Integration of science and clinical practice through structured placements.
Full clinical rotations across major specialties at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and partner sites. Increasing responsibility and preparation for foundation training. Final year includes student assistantships and elective opportunities.
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
Sheffield is an unusual case, and worth understanding properly. Its strongest widening participation mechanisms are not about shaving a grade off an offer — they are about removing whole stages of the selection process. And the course this page describes, the four-year A101, is the most extreme example: the entire programme is ring-fenced for widening participation applicants.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| All 24 places are reserved for you | Sheffield states: "We have 24 places for our four-year MBChB Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) programme, which are available to home applicants from backgrounds that are under-represented in higher education." You are not competing against the general graduate field — everyone in the pool had to clear the same widening participation bar. |
| BBB rather than AAA at A level | A101 requires at least BBB at A level, one of which must be Chemistry or Biology, alongside a 2:1 or first in an appropriate life sciences degree. The five-year A100 asks for AAA. IB equivalent: 32 points with 5s at Higher Level including Chemistry or Biology. |
| GCSEs and AS levels are not considered at all | Sheffield states plainly: "We do not consider GCSEs or AS Levels for this programme." If your GCSEs were taken in a difficult year, they simply do not count here. The only GCSE requirement is English Language at grade 4/C, and that is an English language requirement rather than an academic score. |
| You are not ranked on academic attainment | "We do not rank applicants on the basis of their academic attainment." Your A levels and degree are a threshold to clear, not a score to maximise. Ranking for interview is on UCAT alone. |
| Resits are accepted | A level resits are accepted, taken in the same sitting, one resit per A level, and only the A levels that fall short need retaking. |
| A route in if your pre-degree A levels lacked science | If you hold BBB or better but without Chemistry or Biology, Sheffield will consider you provided you took an A level in Chemistry or Biology during or after your degree and achieved (or are predicted) grade B or higher. |
If A101 is not the right fit — because you are not a graduate, or because you only meet one of the criteria above — Sheffield runs three further mechanisms on the five-year A100:
For a side-by-side comparison, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.
| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| UK (Home) | £10,050 — the England-wide fee cap for 2027/28. Sheffield has not yet published a 2027/28 figure; the most recent figure on its undergraduate fees pages is £9,790 for students starting in September 2026. Confirm the exact figure with Sheffield. |
| International | Not applicable. Sheffield states of A101: "This entry route is not available to international students." All 24 places are for home applicants. |
This is the part that catches graduate applicants out, so here is Sheffield's published position in full:
Check your own entitlement before you commit — prior study affects what Student Finance England will lend you, and the alumni-funded element is not a guarantee in writing.
Applying to medical school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK medical schools and how they compare, see the UK Medical Schools hub page.
Sheffield GEM (A101) is exclusively for graduates who meet two or more of Sheffield's published Widening Participation criteria — living in an IMD quintile 1 or 2 area, care experience, having been a carer, estrangement, parenting responsibilities, Free School Meals entitlement, forced migrant status, parents unemployed or in unskilled work, receipt of a 16–19 Bursary or similar grant with an income threshold of £25,000 or below, or a declared disability. Meeting only one is not enough. It is not a general graduate entry programme.
Yes, and the subject matters. Sheffield requires an upper second-class or first-class degree in an appropriate life sciences subject. Its eligible list includes BDS, BMedSci, Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, Human Biology, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy and MPharm. Crucially, Nursing, Psychology, Chemistry and Biology degrees are explicitly ineligible - so a Biology or Chemistry degree will not qualify you despite being a science.
Sheffield GEM offers 24 places for home students annually. This makes it one of the smaller graduate entry programmes in the UK, but competition is limited to those meeting WP criteria.
No, Sheffield GEM is only available to applicants with Home fee status who meet the Widening Participation criteria. International students should consider the 5-year A100 programme instead.
All Sheffield GEM applicants must sit the UCAT, and Sheffield publishes a minimum threshold of 1800 out of 2700 for 2027 entry. Clearing it is the minimum, not a target: with only 24 places, aim as high as you can. Your SJT result is converted into a score out of five, but for A101 it is only reviewed if you are invited to interview.
If you don't meet the Widening Participation criteria, you cannot apply to the A101 GEM programme. However, graduates can apply to Sheffield's standard 5-year A100 programme, which accepts both school leavers and graduates without WP requirements.
First, ensure you genuinely meet the WP eligibility criteria. Then focus on achieving a strong UCAT score, gaining meaningful experience in healthcare settings, and preparing thoroughly for the MMI. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.
Most applicants treat the medical school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
