HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

  • All must meet GCSE requirements and sit the UCAT
  • Graduates from WP backgrounds may also consider the A101 GEM programme

UCAT Requirements

All applicants must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. Sheffield uses a UCAT threshold score to filter applicants before considering other factors.

Aspect Detail
Minimum Threshold (2026 entry) 1800 / 2700 — the figure Sheffield publishes for the Bradford and Sheffield Hallam pathway routes. The threshold is set per year of entry.
Minimum Threshold (2027 entry) Not yet published — Sheffield sets a new threshold each cycle. Do not plan around the 2026 number.
Contextual UCAT threshold None — there is no lower threshold for widening participation applicants. What some of them get instead is exemption from UCAT ranking; see the widening participation section below.
How UCAT is Used Threshold applied first, then ranked by overall academic profile and UCAT combined
SJT Consideration Yes, SJT band is considered as part of overall assessment
UCAT Weighting Significant weight in initial shortlisting

"Sheffield is one of the medical schools with a clear UCAT threshold. If you're below approximately 1800, your application simply won't progress regardless of your other achievements. However, once you meet that threshold, your academics and overall profile become equally important. It's about hitting that minimum and then demonstrating you're an excellent candidate in every other way."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Selection Criteria

  • UCAT Score: Must meet minimum threshold (~1800)
  • Academic Profile: A-Level predictions/grades and GCSEs
  • Contextual Factors: Considered for WP applicants

Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.

Interview Process

Sheffield uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. No offers are made without an interview.

Aspect Detail
Format Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) in person for home applicants; online panel interview for international applicants
Number of Stations 7-8 stations
Duration per Station Approximately 7 minutes each

Work Experience Requirements

Sheffield expects applicants to have undertaken some form of relevant experience to demonstrate their understanding of and commitment to medicine. While there is no strict minimum hours requirement, they are looking for evidence of:

  • Work experience in healthcare or caring environments
  • Voluntary work demonstrating commitment to helping others
  • Shadowing or clinical observation where possible
  • Reflection on experiences and lessons learned

Sheffield understands that access to clinical work experience varies and will consider alternative evidence of commitment, including online work experience and caring roles within families or communities.

Special Applicant Categories

Do They Accept Resits?

Yes, with conditions

Sheffield does accept resits, under two published conditions:

  • Any and all A-Level resits must be taken in the same sitting. You cannot spread retakes across multiple exam series.
  • Only one resit per A-Level is permitted.

You do not need extenuating circumstances to use this route — it is a published entitlement. The constraint is the timing: plan to retake everything you need in a single sitting.

Do They Accept Re-applicants?

Yes

Re-applicants are welcome to apply again. You will need to demonstrate how your application has improved since your previous attempt, including any new experiences or achievements.

International Students

A100 only

Programme International Students
Medicine MBChB (A100) Accepted
Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) WP backgrounds only, Home fee status

Note: International applicants must meet English language requirements (typically IELTS 7.5 overall with 7.0 in each component).

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

Sheffield is unusual, and worth reading closely. Its strongest mechanisms are not about shaving grades — they are about bypassing UCAT ranking, or bypassing A-levels, entirely. It also runs an entire graduate programme ring-fenced for widening participation applicants.

They Might Apply To You If…

  • You live in IMD 2019 quintile 1 or 2 — a neighbourhood with low higher education participation or recognised disadvantage
  • You were entitled to free school meals at some point in the six years before your final KS4 year
  • You are care experienced or a care leaver, including kinship care and adoption from care
  • You have been an unpaid carer
  • You are estranged from your family
  • You have parenting responsibilities for a child aged 17 or under
  • You are a forced migrant — refugee status, humanitarian protection, limited or discretionary leave to remain, or seeking asylum
  • You are the first generation in your family to enter higher education
  • You have taken part in Realising Opportunities, Access to Sheffield (Y12–13) or the Access to Sheffield Summer School

Home fee status is required, and for A100 Sheffield must be your FIRM UCAS choice for the contextual offer to apply at results time. That is stricter than most Sheffield courses, where insurance choices also benefit.

If you qualify, Sheffield may lower the grades it asks of you, give your application additional consideration when results come out — and, on three specific routes, remove the UCAT ranking or the A-level requirement from your application altogether.

What It Gets You

How it helps What that means for you
The Access Sheffield contextual offer (A100) AAB including Chemistry or Biology at grade A and a second science, instead of AAA. The IB equivalent falls from 36 (with 6 in three Higher Level subjects) to 34 (with 6 in HL Chemistry or Biology and 6,5 in two further HL subjects). Scottish Highers fall from AAABB + AA at Advanced Higher to AABBB + AB. You also get additional consideration at results time if you narrowly miss, and Access+ support including a travel bursary for open days and offer-holder days.
Access to Sheffield (Medicine): skipping the UCAT ranking The standout benefit at Sheffield. Participants in the two-year Access to Sheffield (Medicine) Y12–13 programme "will not have their UCAT score ranked alongside other applicants" when Sheffield decides who progresses to interview. You still have to clear the minimum threshold, but you are not competing on UCAT after that. They are also eligible for a contextual offer up to two A-level grades below standard, and a relaxed GCSE requirement of five GCSEs at 9–6/A*–B with only grade 4/C needed in Science, Maths and English Language — against the standard five at grade 7/A with 6/B in Maths, English and the sciences.
The Bradford and Sheffield Hallam pathways: skipping A-levels entirely The most radical mechanism Sheffield operates. If you have completed year 1 of Bradford B991 Foundation in Clinical Sciences and Medicine, Bradford B990 Clinical Sciences, Sheffield Hallam A049 Biomedical Science with Foundation Year or Sheffield Hallam B940 Biomedical Sciences with at least 70%, and you meet two or more of the widening participation criteria, then "your A Levels (or equivalent) will not be considered as part of our selection process" at all, and your UCAT is not ranked against other applicants. GCSE requirement drops to grade 4/C in Maths and English Language only. (Bradford B991 also needs 70% in the Chemistry for Clinical Sciences module CLS3003-B; Hallam A049 also needs at least 60% in every module.)
Graduate Entry Medicine (A101): a whole programme ring-fenced All 24 home places on the four-year A101 are reserved for applicants from under-represented backgrounds who meet two or more of the widening participation criteria. You compete only against each other. The academic requirement is a 2:1 in a life sciences degree plus at least BBB at A-level (each of the three at B or above, including Chemistry or Biology) — or IB 32 with 5 in three HL subjects including Chemistry or Biology. GCSEs and AS levels are not considered at all, and applicants are not ranked on academic attainment. The WP form must be completed by 31 October.
Dentistry BDS The Access Sheffield offer for Dental Surgery BDS is AAB including Chemistry and Biology, instead of AAA. The IB equivalent falls from 36 (with 6 in HL Chemistry/Biology) to 34 (with 6,5 at HL).

What It Does Not Get You

  • A plain contextual offer does not improve your odds of an interview. Sheffield is unusually blunt about this: "Applicants who meet the Access Sheffield or Access+ criteria must still meet our minimum UCAT score threshold for their year of entry, and have their UCAT score ranked alongside other applicants." It buys you a lower grade requirement, not a better shot at being shortlisted.
  • Only one programme exempts you from UCAT ranking. "Only participants in the Access to Sheffield (Medicine) widening access programme can progress to interview without their UCAT score being ranked alongside other applicants." Realising Opportunities participants and everyone else are ranked normally.
  • Other foundation and degree programmes do not count. Medicine applicants from any foundation or degree programme other than the four named Bradford and Sheffield Hallam pathways must meet the standard entry requirements.
  • A101 eligibility is not an offer. "Meeting the minimum academic, UCAT and Widening Participation entry requirements does not guarantee an invitation to interview or the offer of a place."
  • Firm choice only for A100. The contextual offer applies at results time only if Sheffield is your firm choice.
  • Dentistry gets the grade reduction and nothing else. No WP adjustment to UCAT ranking or shortlisting is published for the BDS.
  • Level 2 qualifications other than GCSEs are never accepted as GCSE equivalents on any route.
  • Watch the student finance trap. Students using the Bradford or Hallam pathway may have reduced student finance entitlement because of prior study. Sheffield publishes worked examples showing some students must self-fund one or two years — read those before committing to the route.

One inconsistency worth taking to Sheffield directly: the widening access page says access-programme participants are eligible for a contextual offer "up to two A Level grades below" standard, while the A100 course page publishes the Access Sheffield offer as AAB — one grade below AAA. Both are live on Sheffield's own site. The course page figure is the one that will appear in your offer; the two-grade figure looks like the policy ceiling.

For a side-by-side view of how every school handles this, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK) £10,050 — the statutory cap for England in 2027/28. Sheffield has not yet published its own 2027/28 home rate; its published figure for 2026 entry was £9,790.
International (overseas) — Medicine £51,380 per year, for five years
International (overseas) — Dentistry, for comparison £55,000 per year, for five years

The international figures are Sheffield's own, published for 2027/28 students on its tuition fees for undergraduate overseas students page, which prices Medicine and Dentistry separately from every other course. (For 2026/27 the equivalent figures were £47,575 for Medicine and £50,925 for Dentistry.) The fee you pay in your first year is the same for each year of your course, provided you stay on the same course.

Most home A100 students use Student Finance England loans for tuition and maintenance in the first four years, and become eligible for NHS funding from the fifth year — a bursary, a £1,000 grant, a reduced Maintenance Loan, and the full cost of tuition fees.

Course Structure

The MBChB programme at Sheffield is organised into phases that progressively build clinical skills and knowledge:

Phase 1: Years 1-2

Foundation in biomedical sciences integrated with early clinical exposure. Students learn the scientific basis of medicine while gaining practical skills and patient contact from the first year.

Phase 2: Years 3-4

Clinical rotations across major specialties with increasing responsibility. Students work within clinical teams at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and community settings, developing practical skills and clinical reasoning.

Phase 3: Year 5

Preparation for practice as a foundation doctor. Advanced clinical attachments, student assistantships, and elective opportunities to explore areas of interest.

Intercalation

Optional intercalated degrees are available, allowing students to pursue in-depth study in areas such as biomedical sciences, medical education, or research methodology.

Location and Teaching Sites

Students train primarily at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and partner sites:

  • Royal Hallamshire Hospital - Major teaching hospital and trauma centre
  • Northern General Hospital - Large acute hospital with diverse specialties
  • Sheffield Children's Hospital - Paediatric teaching and clinical experience
  • Jessop Wing - Maternity and women's health
  • Weston Park Hospital - Specialist cancer centre
  • Community GP Practices - Primary care experience throughout the region

"Sheffield offers a genuinely supportive environment with excellent clinical exposure. The city is one of the most affordable and student-friendly in the UK, and the medical school has a strong sense of community. Students consistently rate their experience highly, and the clinical training across Sheffield's hospitals prepares you well for foundation training."

Sheffield Medicine FAQ

What UCAT score do I need for Sheffield?

Sheffield uses a UCAT threshold of approximately 1800 for 2026 entry. You must meet this minimum to be considered for interview selection. Once you meet the threshold, your overall academic profile and UCAT score are considered together for ranking purposes.

Does Sheffield use MMI or panel interviews?

Sheffield uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format with 7-8 stations. Each station lasts approximately 7 minutes and assesses different competencies including communication, ethical reasoning, problem-solving, and motivation for medicine.

Can I apply to Sheffield if I've resit my A-Levels?

Yes. Sheffield permits one resit per A-Level, and requires that any and all resits are taken in the same sitting. You do not need extenuating circumstances, but you do need to take all your retakes in one exam series rather than spreading them out.

Is Sheffield good for international students?

International students can apply to the 5-year Medicine MBChB (A100) programme. Sheffield is known for its welcoming community and support for international students. However, the Graduate Entry Medicine programme (A101) is only available to applicants from Widening Participation backgrounds with Home fee status.

What is the Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme at Sheffield?

Sheffield's GEM programme (A101) is a 4-year accelerated course exclusively for graduates from Widening Participation backgrounds. It offers approximately 15 places annually and requires a science degree with UCAT. This is not a general graduate entry route, it has specific WP eligibility criteria.

How can I improve my chances of getting into Sheffield Medicine?

Focus on three areas: achieve strong academics (AAA at A-Level), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT to score above the ~1800 threshold, and gain meaningful work experience that you can reflect on articulately. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.

Is University of Sheffield a good medical school?

Yes, Sheffield is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the UK for student satisfaction and graduate outcomes. It offers excellent clinical exposure across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, a supportive learning environment, and the city itself is one of the most affordable and student-friendly in the country.
