HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

About UCL Medicine

Considering UCL Medicine? Here's a complete breakdown of entry requirements, admissions criteria, and the application process for 2027 entry.

UCL Medical School (UCLMS) is one of the UK's most prestigious and research-intensive medical schools, located in the heart of London's Bloomsbury district. As part of University College London, the school benefits from world-class facilities and a rich academic tradition dating back to 1834.

UCL offers a single route into medicine: the 6-year MBBS BSc integrated programme. This distinctive course includes a compulsory intercalated BSc (iBSc) in Year 3, providing students with the opportunity to explore a specialist subject in depth before completing their clinical training. Graduates with a UK degree can complete the programme in 5 years as the iBSc is waived.

The school is known for its research excellence, early clinical exposure, and access to diverse patient populations across North London's major teaching hospitals.

Considering this school? Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol™ coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system, from UCAT preparation to university selection to interview readiness. 93% of our students receive at least one offer. Find out how it works.

UCAT Requirements

All applicants must sit the UCAT in the same year they apply. UCL uses the total UCAT score to rank candidates for interview invitations, with SJT used as a tiebreaker where candidates have equal total scores.

Aspect Detail
How UCAT is Used Overall UCAT score used to rank and select candidates for interview
SJT Consideration Used as tiebreaker for candidates with equal total scores
Published Cut-off No fixed published cut-off on the new 2700 scale
UCAT Scale Scored out of 2700 (Abstract Reasoning removed)

Important: UCL does not publish a fixed UCAT threshold. The overall UCAT score is used to select candidates for interview, with the situational judgement test acting as a tiebreaker. With Abstract Reasoning removed, the UCAT is now scored out of 2700, so aim to score as highly as possible across all sections.

"UCL is one of the medical schools where your UCAT score is absolutely critical for getting an interview. Unlike some schools that use a holistic approach, UCL primarily ranks applicants by UCAT total score once you meet the academic requirements. This means a strong UCAT can genuinely make or break your UCL application."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Note: The UCAT format changed in July 2025 with the removal of Abstract Reasoning, reducing the maximum score from 3,600 to 2,700. Cut-off scores and statistics from previous years may not directly apply to the current format.

Interview Process

UCL uses Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) to assess candidates. The format allows applicants to demonstrate multiple attributes across different stations and interviewers.

Aspect Detail
Format MMI with up to 8 stations
Duration per Station 5 minutes (plus 1 minute reading time)
Interview Period December to end of March (rolling invitations)
Location - Home Students In-person at Bloomsbury campus
Location - Overseas Students Online
Annual Interview Invitations Approximately 1,000 candidates

What UCL Assesses at Interview

UCL emphasises both academic attainment and non-academic attributes:

  • Integrity and ethical reasoning
  • Empathy and communication skills
  • Reasoning and problem-solving ability
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Motivation for medicine
  • Ability to think on your feet

UCL's Interview Advice

UCL recommends candidates avoid over-preparing or memorising information. Instead, they advise reflecting on your own skills, attributes, and behaviours, and how you have developed these both in and outside of school. The ability to draw on genuine personal experiences is valued.

UCL attracts a very large number of medical applicants, which makes it one of the most competitive medical schools in the UK. We are not going to put a precise ratio on that, because we could not re-verify the underlying numbers in UCL's own published source this cycle. Ask UCL Medical School directly if a published figure matters to your shortlisting.

UCL attracts the greatest number of medical applicants among the G5 universities, making it one of the most competitive medical schools in the UK. Strong preparation across all aspects of the application is essential.

Work Experience Requirements

UCL does not require clinical work experience and does not specify a minimum duration. However, they expect applicants to have an understanding of what a career in healthcare involves.

What UCL Values

  • Any experience working with other people (retail, hospitality, community work, volunteering)
  • Evidence of developing relevant skills and attributes
  • Reflection on what you've learned from your experiences
  • Wider reading and engagement with medicine beyond the classroom
  • Teamwork, leadership, and communication skills demonstrated through activities

UCL may request evidence of work experience from selected candidates, and your reflections on experiences may be assessed at interview. The senior admissions tutor has stated they look for "interesting" candidates with interests beyond just medicine.

"UCL is genuinely looking for well-rounded individuals. They want to see that you've engaged with the world, developed as a person, and can reflect meaningfully on your experiences. Clinical shadowing is not the be-all and end-all here. What matters is what you've learned about yourself, about working with others, and about what being a doctor really means."

— Dr. Ash, Future Doc

Special Applicant Categories

Do They Accept A-Level Resits?

Generally No

UCL does not accept A-Level resits for Medicine, including restarting Year 12. Exceptions are only considered with documented extenuating circumstances (serious illness, bereavement, or other unavoidable disruptions). Strong evidence must be submitted before or alongside your UCAS application.

Exceptions:

  • GCSE resits are permitted
  • Graduates who resat A-Levels before their degree may be considered

Do They Accept Re-applicants?

Yes

Re-applicants are welcome. You must resit the UCAT in the new application cycle as previous scores are not valid. Your application will be assessed on its current merits.

International Students

Accepted

Aspect Detail
Eligibility International students accepted
UCAT Overall score used to select for interview (typically more competitive than Home)
Interview Format Online MMI
English Language IELTS or equivalent required if English not first language
Deferral Check with UCL for current policy

Note: Competition for international places is significantly higher, so international applicants typically need a stronger overall UCAT score than Home applicants to be selected for interview.

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

What We Can and Cannot Confirm for UCL Medicine

We will not guess at this one, because the answer matters too much.

UCL runs a contextual offer scheme called Access UCL at institutional level. What we could not verify is the two things an applicant actually needs to know: whether MBBS BSc Medicine is an eligible course under Access UCL or is excluded from it, and whether UCL Medical School publishes any medicine-specific contextual adjustment of its own — a lower UCAT threshold, a separate widening participation pool, or an interview guarantee.

Every UCL URL we attempted returned HTTP 403 behind a Cloudflare challenge: the MBBS BSc course pages in both their published forms, the Access UCL widening participation page, the UCL Medical School undergraduate pages, the UCL fee pages, and the bare ucl.ac.uk host. We tried a browser user agent, curl's default, and no user agent at all. No PDF or sitemap route was available either. So we have read no UCL-published text this cycle, and we are not going to reconstruct a scheme from second-hand summaries and present it as fact.

Absence of evidence here is not evidence of absence. We are not saying UCL has no scheme for Medicine. We are saying we have not been able to read what it says, and that you should not plan around our silence in either direction.

What To Ask UCL Before You Commit a UCAS Choice

Question to put to UCL Why it matters
Is MBBS BSc Medicine (A100) an eligible course under the Access UCL contextual offer scheme, or is it excluded? Several universities run an institution-wide contextual scheme that specifically excludes Medicine. If UCL does too, a lower grade offer is simply not on the table and you need to know that before you spend a choice.
If Medicine is eligible, what is the contextual offer in grades? The difference between a one-grade and a two-grade reduction changes which schools are realistic for you.
Does UCL Medical School apply a lower UCAT threshold, extra shortlisting points, or a separate ranking pool for contextual applicants? At UCL, interview selection is driven heavily by UCAT. An adjustment at that stage would be worth more than a grade reduction.
Is there any guaranteed or prioritised interview for widening participation applicants? UCL receives more medical applications than any other G5 university. Getting to interview is the hard part.
What are the Access UCL eligibility criteria, and how do I check whether I meet them? Eligibility is usually assessed automatically from your UCAS form, but you need to know which flags UCL uses.

What We Are Not Publishing, and Why

  • No eligibility criteria. We have not read UCL's published list, so we are not reproducing one.
  • No contextual grade offer. Not verified.
  • No contextual UCAT threshold. Not verified.
  • No interview guarantee, and no statement that none exists. Not verified either way.
  • No gateway or foundation route. UCL's own pages state it does not offer a separate Graduate Entry or Extended Medical Degree Programme, but we could not re-verify that this cycle.

A "we don't know" that you can act on — by asking UCL a specific question — is more use than a confident paragraph that turns out to be wrong in March.

For a side-by-side comparison, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.

Fees (2027/28)

Fee Status Annual Tuition
Home (UK) £10,050 — the England statutory fee cap for 2027/28, subject to Parliamentary approval. We could not reach UCL's own fee page to confirm UCL charges the full cap
International (pre-clinical years) 2027/28: TBC. Not verified from UCL's own source
International (clinical years) 2027/28: TBC. Not verified. UCL bands its overseas medicine fee, charging in five annual instalments that differ between pre-clinical and clinical years, so ask for the figure for each year rather than a single headline number

Why the international rows are blank: ucl.ac.uk returns HTTP 403 to every automated request we make, including the course pages and the fee pages. We will not publish an international fee we have not seen in UCL's own words, and we will not carry a previous year's figure forward as if it were current. UCL also excludes international Medicine fees from its cohort fee guarantee, which means the figure can rise during your degree — by no more than RPI-X, on UCL's published terms — so a single year's number would understate the real cost of a six-year course in any case. Checked October 2026.

If you are an international applicant, the number you need is the total across six years with the pre-clinical and clinical bands set out separately. Ask UCL for that directly before you apply.

Course Structure

The UCL MBBS BSc is a 6-year integrated programme (5 years for graduates with a UK degree). The course is organised across three distinct phases with a compulsory intercalated BSc:

Years 1-2: Pre-Clinical Foundation

Foundational biomedical sciences with early clinical integration. Students study themed integrated modules covering the scientific basis of medicine while gaining exposure to clinical environments. Each year carries 120 credits with Clinical and Professional Practice modules running throughout.

Year 3: Intercalated BSc (iBSc)

A compulsory intercalated year where students complete a specialist BSc programme in an area of interest. The iBSc is taught across multiple UCL faculties and includes a research dissertation or laboratory project worth 30-45 credits. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a BSc (Hons) in their chosen programme.

Note: Graduates with a UK degree have the iBSc year waived, completing the course in 5 years.

Years 4-6: Clinical Training

Practice-oriented learning with rotations across medical and surgical specialties. Each clinical year carries 180 credits. Students gain experience across UCL's partner NHS trusts in North London and beyond, including elective opportunities.

Teaching Sites

Students train at major North London teaching hospitals, including:

  • University College London Hospitals (UCLH) - Major academic health sciences centre
  • Royal Free Hospital - Large teaching hospital in Hampstead
  • Whittington Hospital - District general hospital in North London
  • Great Ormond Street Hospital - World-renowned children's hospital
  • GP Practices - Primary care placements across the region

Contact Hours

MBBS term dates extend over 191 weeks (excluding exam weeks and iBSc year), with 104 weeks spent on clinical placements. Total taught and placement hours exceed 5,500 hours. Students are required to attend timetabled activities from 9am-5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and 9am-12.50pm on Wednesdays.

How to Strengthen Your Application

UCL Medicine FAQ

What UCAT score do I need for UCL Medical School?

UCL does not publish a fixed UCAT cut-off. Instead, your overall UCAT score is used to rank and select candidates for interview, with the situational judgement test used as a tiebreaker. With Abstract Reasoning removed, the UCAT is now scored out of 2700, so there is no fixed published threshold; aim to score as highly as possible across all sections.

Does UCL use MMI or panel interviews?

UCL uses Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) with up to 8 stations, each lasting approximately 5 minutes with 1 minute reading time. Home students interview in-person at the Bloomsbury campus, while international students interview online.

Can I apply to UCL if I've resit my A-Levels?

Generally no. UCL does not accept A-Level resits for Medicine unless you have documented extenuating circumstances such as serious illness or bereavement. GCSE resits are permitted, and graduates who resat A-Levels before their degree may be considered.

Why is UCL Medicine a 6-year course?

UCL's MBBS includes a compulsory intercalated BSc (iBSc) in Year 3, making it a 6-year programme. This allows students to explore a specialist subject in depth and complete a research project. Graduates with a UK degree complete the course in 5 years as the iBSc is waived.

Is clinical work experience required for UCL?

No, UCL does not require clinical work experience and does not specify a minimum duration. However, they expect you to understand what a healthcare career involves and to have developed relevant skills through any experience working with people. Your reflections on experiences may be assessed at interview.

How competitive is UCL Medical School?

Very competitive. UCL attracts a very large number of medical applicants, and interview selection is driven heavily by the UCAT. We could not re-verify UCL's published application, place, interview or offer-rate figures in UCL's own source this cycle, because ucl.ac.uk blocks automated access, so we are not quoting precise numbers. Strong preparation across every part of the application is essential, and the UCAT in particular.

Does UCL consider the personal statement?

UCL does not use the Personal Statement to select candidates for interview. However, Personal Statements may be used during the interview itself, so it remains important to write a thoughtful and reflective statement.

How can I improve my chances of getting into UCL Medical School?

Focus on three areas: achieve strong academics (A*AA with excellent GCSEs), prepare thoroughly for the UCAT to score as highly as possible, and develop meaningful experiences you can reflect on articulately. Most applicants treat these as separate tasks, which is why the national success rate is just 16%. Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol coordinates every element as one interconnected system, which is why 93% of their students receive at least one offer.

Need Help With Your this school Application?

Most applicants treat the medical school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.

Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.

The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
