According to Cambridge Assessment, the BMAT admission exam will no longer be given starting in 2024–2025. This implies that the final batch of applicants to take the BMAT test will be those who apply in 2023 (for entrance in 2024). i.e the final BMAT test date will be 18th October 2023.
The Biomedical Admission Test, or BMAT for short, was one of the university admissions tests that are created and given by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing, a division of the University of Cambridge.
A number of UK medical schools, including Leeds, Brighton and Sussex, Imperial, Lancaster, UCL, Cambridge and Oxford previously employed the BMAT exam as part of their medical school admissions procedure.
So what next?
Leeds are the only university that already converted to the UCAT for the 2023/24 application cycle, and it is expected that many of the other universities will follow suit
For now it is still undecided what the BMAT-requiring universities will do in their place. To keep up-to-date with the happenings, we recommend that you visit the FutureDoc application guide, which will give you a university-by-university breakdown of each medical school and help you decide which is the right one for you.
What will Oxbridge ( Oxford / Cambridge ) replace the BMAT with?
In the past, students were required to take Oxbridge's own entry examinations for medicine. They could return to this at some point. The UCAT would replace the current BMAT medical schools, resulting in a single entry exam for admission to UK medical schools. An alternate scenario would be for the BMAT universities to band together and create their own entrance exam, which would probably have some UCAT-like components.
All you need to know for now is that you need not waste time preparing for the BMAT... it's out! Don't worry, we will keep you posted with what's coming next.
