First of all, congratulations for getting an interview - all of your hard work so far has paid off! There’s no doubt that interviews can be daunting, so check out FutureDoc’s post on How to Be Confident At Your Medical School Interview to get some top tips. Now onto the next challenge – what should you wear?

Before anything else, check your interview invite email for any information that the University has given. They may have some suggestions regarding what to wear – make sure to follow that if so!

As a general rule, dress smart. Although you’ll not be formally marked on your presentation, first impressions go far. It’s important to appear professional whilst ensuring you feel comfortable and confident.

Clothes

Think professional and smart. For example, a shirt, smart jumper / cardigan with minimalistic or no logos. A suit is not mandatory but if you feel confident and like wearing them then wearing one is a great idea. If a suit isn’t your cup of tea, an ironed shirt with smart trousers can look equally as professional.

If you want to wear a skirt, I’d recommend it be at least knee length.

Crucially, make sure you feel comfortable walking, sitting and standing in the outfit you choose!

Shoes

It’s very important to wear comfortable but smart shoes. There’s nothing worse than having sore feet or blisters throughout and this would also impact on your confidence and demeanour. Make sure your shoes are clean – if possible I would recommend not wearing them on a day-to-day basis around interview time to make sure you don’t get any scuffs or hard to clean stains.

Accessories

Avoid statement jewellery. Think professional – no part of your outfit should have the potential to draw attention away from you and your answers. Stud earrings and a small necklace can look smart but don’t wear anything you might absentmindedly fidget with.

Hair

When it comes to hair think practically. Wear a style that makes you feel confident but you’ll want it away from your face. Not only will this avoid any distraction for you, it will enable the interviewers to see all of your facial expressions.

Makeup and nails

Makeup can have the power to build confidence but try to keep it subtle. Bright eyeshadow and lipstick can look amazing in different situations but may be distracting in the interview. Stick to neutral shades and keep it minimal.

Likewise, nail varnish and false nails can be great expressions of personality, but I would suggest keeping it understated. Again, stick to neutral shades to avoid distraction. You want to ensure the examiners are fully focused on your brilliant answers – not anything else!

Top tips:

  1. Lay your outfit out the day before your interview – this will avoid extra rush and stress on the day and will also enable you to identify any mishaps!
  2. Comfort is key – make sure the outfit you choose is comfortable. If you feel uncomfortable on the day this may affect your confidence or distract you.
  3. Don’t forget to wear a smile!

Now you look the part don’t forget to make sure you read FutureDoc’s blog post on Mastering Medicine Interviews to ensure you are well-equipped to excel in your medicine interviews.
