Graduate Medicine Degree Requirements: What You Actually Need

Science vs any degree, minimum classifications, A-Levels for graduates, and pre-med options

One of the most common questions from graduate applicants is whether their degree qualifies them for medical school. The answer depends on which programmes you're targeting.

This guide breaks down what each GEM programme requires and helps you understand how your academic background fits into the application process.

Key Insight

Your degree will be your highest level of academic currency now. While A-Levels may still matter for some programmes, your degree classification is what most GEM programmes assess first. A strong 2:1 or First opens more doors than anything else.

Overview: Degree Requirements by Programme

Requirement Programmes
Any degree (2:1+) Chester, City St George's, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Southampton, St Andrews (ScotGEM), Surrey, Swansea, Three Counties, Warwick
Science/Health degree Cambridge, Cardiff, King's College London, Nottingham, Oxford, Queen Mary (Barts), Ulster

If you have a non-science degree, you can still apply to 11 of the 18 main GEM programmes. Strategic selection is key.

Non-science graduates: If you have a humanities, social science, arts, or business degree, these 11 programmes are your primary targets. You can still demonstrate scientific aptitude through the UCAT/GAMSAT and interview.

Programmes Requiring Science Degrees

These programmes require a degree in a science, health, or related field:

Cambridge

  • Experimental science degree with substantial biology and chemistry content
  • 2:1 minimum (First preferred)
  • UCAT required
  • Examples: Biological Sciences, Natural Sciences, Biochemistry, Pharmacology

Cardiff

  • 2:1 minimum
  • UCAT required
  • Examples: Biomedical Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, Biology

King's College London

  • Bioscience degree (specific subjects listed on website)
  • 2:1 minimum
  • UCAT required
  • Strong academic focus in selection

Nottingham

  • Science or health-related degree
  • 2:1 minimum
  • GAMSAT required
  • Section 3 (science) performance particularly relevant

Oxford

  • Experimental science degree
  • First or very strong 2:1
  • UCAT required
  • Highly competitive; exceptional academic track record expected

Queen Mary (Barts)

  • Health-related degree
  • 2:1 minimum
  • UCAT required (higher threshold for international students)

Ulster

  • Life science degree
  • 2:1 minimum
  • UCAT required

What About A-Levels?

One of the advantages of GEM programmes is that many waive or reduce A-Level requirements for graduates with strong degrees.

A-Levels Often Waived For:

  • Graduates with a 2:1 or above
  • Graduates with postgraduate qualifications (MSc, PhD)
  • Those applying to programmes that assess primarily on degree and aptitude test

A-Levels May Still Be Considered At:

  • Some programmes that use holistic assessment
  • 5-year undergraduate programmes (if applying as a graduate to standard entry)

Key Insight

If your A-Levels were poor but your degree is strong: Focus on GEM programmes that explicitly waive A-Level requirements for graduates. Many programmes assess graduates primarily on degree classification, UCAT/GAMSAT, and interview. Your A-Levels become much less relevant.

Minimum Classification Requirements

Almost all GEM programmes require a minimum 2:1 (Upper Second Class Honours). Here's what to know:

2:1 Required (Most Programmes)

This is the standard requirement across most GEM programmes. If you have a solid 2:1, you meet the threshold for the majority of options.

First or Strong 2:1 Required

  • Oxford: Effectively requires a First or very high 2:1
  • Cambridge: First preferred, strong 2:1 may be considered

What If You Have a 2:2?

A 2:2 significantly limits your options for GEM programmes. However:

  • Some programmes may consider a 2:2 with a postgraduate qualification (Master's with Merit/Distinction)
  • 5-year undergraduate programmes assess A-Levels more heavily, so a 2:2 may be less limiting
  • A relevant Master's degree can strengthen your profile

What If Your Degree Is Old?

Degrees don't expire. However, if you graduated many years ago:

  • Your degree classification still counts
  • Recent postgraduate study can demonstrate continued academic ability
  • Your UCAT/GAMSAT performance shows current aptitude
  • Work experience and career progression since graduation are relevant

Medical schools assess graduates holistically. An old degree isn't a barrier, but showing recent engagement with learning can strengthen your application.

Pre-Medical Conversion Courses

If you don't have the required degree background, some options exist:

Access to Medicine Courses

Some colleges offer Access to Higher Education diplomas in Medicine/Science. These are typically for those without A-Levels rather than graduates, but may be relevant if your degree is unrelated and you want to build science foundations.

Graduate Diploma in Pre-Medical Studies

Some universities offer pre-medical graduate diplomas designed for those without science backgrounds. These can provide the foundation needed for science-requiring GEM programmes.

Master's Degrees

A relevant Master's degree (e.g., in Biomedical Science) can:

  • Strengthen your academic profile
  • Potentially waive A-Level requirements
  • Demonstrate commitment to the field
  • Help if your first degree classification was weak

Strategic Recommendations

If You Have a Non-Science Degree:

  1. Focus on the 11 programmes accepting any degree
  2. Consider sitting both UCAT and GAMSAT (Swansea and ScotGEM require GAMSAT)
  3. Ensure your UCAT/GAMSAT score is competitive
  4. Build strong clinical experience to demonstrate commitment

If You Have a Science Degree:

  1. All 18 programmes are potentially open to you
  2. Consider whether your specific subject meets requirements (check each school)
  3. Oxford and Cambridge are options if you have a First or very strong 2:1

If You Have a 2:2:

  1. Consider a relevant Master's degree to strengthen your profile
  2. Look at 5-year programmes where A-Levels are weighted more heavily
  3. Contact admissions offices to check if your circumstances are considered
