HOW WE BUILT THIS
We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.
Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Entry year covered: 2027
Important: This programme is only available to UK applicants who meet at least 3 of Plymouth's widening participation (WP) contextual indicators. If you do not meet the WP criteria, you should apply to the standard Plymouth BDS programme (A206) instead.
Plymouth Foundation Dentistry offers a specialist route into dental school with its own admissions criteria. This guide covers the entry requirements, eligibility, and application process for 2026 entry.
The Peninsula Dental School Foundation Year programme (A205) is a 6-year route to the BDS degree designed for UK students from widening participation backgrounds. The first year is a Foundation year that prepares students academically and practically for the dental degree, followed by the standard 5-year BDS curriculum.
Peninsula Dental School is known for its modern, innovative approach to dental education with an emphasis on clinical skills from year one. The Foundation Year programme extends this opportunity to students who have the potential to succeed in dentistry but may not have had the same academic opportunities as others.
Considering Peninsula Dental School (Plymouth) Foundation Year? Future Doc's Predictable Offer Protocol™ coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system, from UCAT preparation to university selection to interview readiness. 93% of our students receive at least one offer. To be eligible for the Plymouth Foundation Year, you must meet at least 3 of the following widening participation contextual indicators:
Check your eligibility: Plymouth provides an online postcode checker tool to help you determine if you meet the area-based criteria. Check the Plymouth website for the most current list of eligible indicators.
No admissions test is required for the Plymouth Foundation Year programme. Unlike some dental schools that require the UCAT, Plymouth Foundation Year applicants are assessed based on their A-Levels, contextual eligibility, personal statement, and interview performance.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Admissions Test | Not required |
| UCAT | Not needed for Foundation Year |
| Selection Based On | A-Levels, WP criteria, personal statement, interview |
"Plymouth Foundation Year is a fantastic opportunity for students from widening participation backgrounds who might not have achieved the grades for direct entry but have genuine potential and drive to become excellent dentists. The fact that no UCAT is required removes a significant barrier. Your personal statement and interview become crucial, this is where you can really demonstrate your motivation and suitability for dentistry."
— Dr. Ash, Future Doc
Plymouth uses Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) for the Foundation Year programme. Candidates rotate through several stations designed to assess different competencies required for a career in dentistry.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) |
| What's Assessed | Communication, ethical reasoning, problem-solving, motivation, manual dexterity |
| Personal Statement | Used in application and may inform interview questions |
Peninsula Dental School values candidates who can demonstrate resilience, reflect on their experiences, and show genuine commitment to a career in dentistry. Be prepared to discuss how your background has shaped you and what you can bring to the dental profession.

Plymouth expects applicants to demonstrate commitment to dentistry and understanding of the profession. You should be able to show:
Plymouth understands that widening participation students may have had fewer opportunities to gain traditional dental work experience. Quality of reflection is valued over quantity, focus on what you've learned from the experiences you have had.
Within a three-year limit
Plymouth publishes a time limit rather than a resit count: "A Level or accepted equivalent qualifications must be completed in no more than 3 years of study."
In practice this means a resit year is possible, but your Level 3 qualifications must still be finished within three years of study overall. If a retake would take you beyond that, you would fall outside the published requirement.
Not Accepted
This programme is only open to UK applicants who meet the widening participation criteria. International students cannot apply to Plymouth Foundation Year Dentistry.
If you do not meet at least 3 of Plymouth's widening participation indicators, you cannot apply to the Foundation Year programme. You should instead consider the standard Plymouth BDS programme (A206), which has higher A-Level requirements (AAA) and requires the UCAT.
Mature students who meet the WP criteria are welcome to apply. Plymouth values the life experience and commitment that mature students often bring. Contact admissions if you have questions about alternative qualifications.
A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.
What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.
At Plymouth, this foundation year is a widening participation route — you cannot be admitted to it without meeting the contextual criteria. But Plymouth also softens the five-year A206 BDS for widening access applicants, and the two schemes use different eligibility maths. Read both before deciding which to apply to.
For this course (A205) you need at least 5 points from the criteria below, and you must not meet both the A-level and GCSE requirements for the five-year A206 BDS (meeting one but not the other is fine):
Evidence is submitted through the student portal, the link to which is sent automatically once Plymouth receives your UCAS application.
If you qualify, Plymouth does not simply lower your offer — it puts you on a different six-year programme with a lower offer, a lower GCSE bar and no admissions test at all.
| How it helps | What that means for you |
|---|---|
| A three-grade lower offer, on a different programme | BBB (B in Biology, B in a second science from Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology) against A*AA – AAB for the five-year A206. The IB equivalent falls to 28–32 points with HL5 in Biology and HL5 in another science. |
| A substantially relaxed GCSE requirement | 5 GCSE passes at grade C/4 or above including English Language, Maths and two sciences, against 7 GCSE passes for the five-year A206. |
| The admissions test removed entirely | The UCAT is not required for this course. Not a lower threshold — no test at all. That is unusual, and it removes the single biggest barrier for many applicants. |
| Alternative Level 3 qualifications opened up | BTEC National Extended Diploma at DDM, BTEC National Diploma at DM plus A-level Biology at B, City & Guilds Extended Diploma in Dental Nursing at Distinction plus BB at A-level, the NEBDN Dental Nursing qualification plus A-level Biology at B, or a science-based Access to Higher Education Diploma (60 credits, 45 at Level 3, 15 of those in Biology or Human Biology, Distinction in 33 credits and Merit in 12). |
| If you would rather apply to the five-year A206: an AAB widening access offer | Plymouth will accept AAB (A in Biology, A in a second science) instead of A*AA–AAB for applicants who meet at least three widening access indicators — note this is a count of three plain indicators, not the weighted five-point total used for the foundation route. The IB equivalent is 35 points with HL6/HL6. |
| A relaxed resit policy on the five-year route | "The resit policy for Widening Participation students is ABC", against ABB at first sitting for standard applicants. M2 is also accepted in place of grade B at A-level for alternative Level 3 qualifications. |
One genuine asymmetry worth noticing: on the medicine side of the same university, South West residence and Peninsula Pathways are worth only 1 point each, where on this dentistry foundation route they are worth 3. If you are a South West applicant, this route treats your location as far more significant than the medicine route does.

| Fee Status | Annual Tuition |
|---|---|
| UK (Home) — Foundation Year and BDS Years 1–5 | £10,050 per year, full-time |
| International | Not accepted — Plymouth states: "We are unable to accept international applicants for this programme going forward (2024 entry onwards)." |
Verified from the BDS Dental Surgery with Integrated Foundation Year course page, which states: "Tuition fees for new full-time UK students starting in 2027-2028 — Full-time study £10,050 per year." (The equivalent 2026–2027 figure was £9,790.) Module fees for repeated or part-time study are listed as to be confirmed.
Student Finance England funding is available for all six years. Students from widening participation backgrounds may also be eligible for bursaries and support funds — check the Plymouth funding pages.
The Foundation year builds the scientific knowledge and study skills needed to succeed on the BDS programme. You'll study biology, chemistry, anatomy, and develop academic skills alongside an introduction to dental sciences. The year also includes early clinical exposure and practice in simulation labs.
After successful completion of the Foundation year, you join the 5-year BDS programme. Peninsula Dental School is known for its innovative curriculum with early patient contact, you'll be working with patients from year one. The programme emphasises practical clinical skills alongside theoretical knowledge.
Applying to dental school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:
For an overview of all UK dental schools and how they compare, see the UK Dental Schools hub page.
No, there is no admissions test required for the Foundation Year programme. Selection is based on your A-Levels, widening participation eligibility, personal statement, and interview performance. This is different from the standard Plymouth BDS programme which does require the UCAT.
You need BBB at A-Level including Grade B in Biology, plus Grade B in a second science from Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted. These are lower than the AAA required for standard entry, recognising that WP students may have had fewer academic opportunities.
You need to meet at least 3 of Plymouth's WP indicators. These include factors like attending a school with below-average results, being first in family to attend university, living in a low participation area (POLAR4), receiving free school meals, or having care experience. Check Plymouth's website for their postcode checker tool and full list of current criteria.
No, you must meet at least 3 of Plymouth's widening participation indicators to be eligible for the Foundation Year. If you meet fewer than 3 criteria, you would need to apply to the standard BDS programme (A206) with its higher entry requirements.
The total time to qualification is 6 years: 1 year Foundation + 5 years BDS. Upon successful completion, you will graduate with a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) degree, the same qualification as students who entered via standard entry.
Peninsula is a relatively modern dental school known for its innovative curriculum. Students get early clinical exposure from year one and benefit from outreach placements across Devon and Cornwall. The school has excellent purpose-built facilities and a reputation for producing well-prepared, patient-focused graduates.
Most applicants treat the dental school application as a series of separate hurdles: the UCAT, personal statement, work experience, university selection, and interviews. They try to solve each one independently. This creates a fragmented approach where the pieces never add up.
Future Doc works differently. Through the Predictable Offer Protocol, a dedicated coach who knows your complete profile coordinates every element of your application as one interconnected system. Every decision is made with the full picture in mind.
The result: 93% of our students receive at least one offer. If they don't, they come back next year for free.
