HOW WE BUILT THIS

We compile these profiles from each university's own published admissions pages and review them monthly. Entry requirements do change mid-cycle, and universities sometimes publish updates without announcing them.

Use this page to get oriented quickly, build your shortlist, and work out which questions to ask — then confirm the specifics that your application depends on (grades, admissions test, fees, eligibility) directly with the university before you apply. If you spot something that looks out of date, tell us and we will check it.

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Entry year covered: 2027

Important — Private University: Buckingham is a private (independent) university. For January 2027 entry it publishes £41,500 per year for UK students and £47,000 per year for international students — £186,750 and £211,500 respectively for the full 4.5-year course, plus a £10,000 non-refundable deposit. Tuition fee loan support is capped at £6,525 a year, so student finance will not come close to covering it.

Check before you apply: at the time of our October 2026 review, Buckingham's MB ChB course page carried the notice "Due to unprecedented demand MB ChB applications are paused from 20 May. Please keep checking this page for further updates on when applications are re-opened." Confirm the current position with FMHS-admissions@buckingham.ac.uk before you build a plan around Buckingham.

About Buckingham Medical School

Considering Buckingham Medicine? Here's a complete breakdown of entry requirements, admissions criteria, and the application process for 2027 entry.

The University of Buckingham is the UK's only independent (private) university offering a medical degree. The medical school, established in partnership with Milton Keynes University Hospital, offers a distinctive 4.5-year programme that achieves an accelerated timeline through year-round study with shorter holidays.

Buckingham is popular with students who may not have secured a place at NHS-funded schools, or who are attracted by the shorter programme duration. The school has GMC accreditation and produces doctors who can practise in the UK.

Buckingham Medicine Entry Requirements

A-Level Requirements

Qualification Requirement
A-Level Grades ABB (minimum)
Required Subjects Chemistry or Biology
Third Subject Any subject (excluding General Studies)

GCSE Requirements

  • Grade 4 minimum in English Language
  • Grade 4 minimum in Mathematics

International Baccalaureate

  • 32 points overall, to include three Higher Level subjects
  • Chemistry or Biology at Higher Level 6, with the other science at Higher Level 5

Admissions Test and Selection Process

Buckingham does not use the UCAT. Selection is run in-house in three stages, and applicants sit Buckingham's own computer-based assessment instead of a national admissions test.

Aspect Detail
UCAT Required No — the UCAT is not used at any stage of selection
Stage 1 Academic Screening against the A-Level and GCSE entry requirements
Stage 2 Multiple Mini Assessment (MMA) — a computer-based test made up of a series of tasks intended to test applicants' analysis, interpretation and judgement abilities related to Good Medical Practice. Exceptionally high performing students may receive an offer after stage 2.
Stage 3 Multiple Mini Interview (MMI), also referred to as the Objective Structured Selection Examination (OSSE)

"Buckingham is a genuine option for students who can afford the fees and want the shortest route to becoming a doctor in the UK. The smaller intake means more personalised attention, and the accelerated timeline can be attractive. However, the financial commitment is substantial - make sure you fully understand the costs before applying."

Interview Process

Format MMI (Multiple Mini Interview), also called the Objective Structured Selection Examination (OSSE)
Number of Stations Not published — Buckingham does not publish a station count for the MMI/OSSE
Duration Not published — Buckingham does not publish station lengths

Contextual & Widening Participation Offers

A contextual offer is an adjustment a university makes for applicants whose circumstances have made their education harder than the grades alone suggest. Universities use them because they recognise that two students with the same predicted grades have not always had the same run at them. They are a formal, published part of the admissions process — not a favour, and not something you have to argue for.

What the adjustment actually is varies by school, and it matters more than most applicants realise. Depending on where you apply, qualifying can mean: a lower grade offer; being ranked against other widening participation applicants rather than the whole field; a guaranteed or prioritised interview; a lower admissions test threshold or extra shortlisting points; relaxed GCSE or subject requirements; or access to a separate gateway or foundation year route.

Buckingham Does Not Run One

The University of Buckingham publishes no contextual offer, widening participation route, gateway year or access scheme for its MB ChB. That is not an oversight on our part — we checked the course page, the medical school landing page, the scholarships and bursaries index, the admissions policies index, the schools and colleges outreach hub, the full Admissions Code of Practice, and the whole-site sitemap. There is nothing there.

Three things make that position unusually explicit:

What Buckingham says What that means for you
Contextual data is collected but not used in decisions The Admissions Code of Practice states the University uses UCAS contextual data "for reporting purposes in order to monitor the success of its access and participation strategy; however, this data is not used when considering individual applications". Flagging your circumstances will not change your offer.
Medicine is outside the Code of Practice anyway That same Admissions Code of Practice explicitly excludes MB ChB Medicine applicants from its scope, so even the generic university admissions framework does not cover you.
There is no admissions test to discount Buckingham does not use the UCAT or BMAT. Selection is academic screening of the written application plus Multiple Mini Interview, so there is no test threshold that could be lowered for a WP applicant.
No targeted financial support for medicine None of Buckingham's published scholarships or bursaries is aimed at widening participation or low-income medicine applicants. Its outreach provision is schools marketing — talks, campus tours, assemblies — and confers no contextual offer, guaranteed interview or access route.

The honest framing. Buckingham's standard academic requirement (ABB including Chemistry or Biology, plus grade 4 GCSE English and Maths) is already markedly lower than publicly funded medical schools ask for, which may be why no separate contextual route exists. But the real barrier here is not grades — it is money. This is a self-funded private degree with no OfS-regulated home quota, and no means-tested support for medicine is published. If cost is the obstacle your circumstances create, a contextual offer would not have solved it and Buckingham does not offer anything that does.

For a side-by-side comparison, see every UK medical and dental school's widening participation scheme.

Fees (2027/28)

Buckingham is a private provider: it receives no government subsidy and there is no regulated home fee. The figures below come from Buckingham's own MB ChB Tuition Fee Illustration documents for the January 2027 entry cohort. Buckingham states that all fees are subject to annual increase in line with inflation (RPI), so the illustrations use an average annual figure.

Fee Status Annual Tuition
UK (Home) £41,500 per year
International £47,000 per year
Total course cost — UK £186,750 across the 4.5 years
Total course cost — International £211,500 across the 4.5 years
Deposit on accepting an offer £10,000, non-refundable once you accept and meet the conditions. It is credited against your first year's fees, and refunded in full if you do not meet the conditions of the offer.

The student finance problem, stated plainly. For courses starting on or after 1 January 2027, UK applicants apply through the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE). Buckingham's own page says that for students at the University of Buckingham, tuition fee loan support "would be restricted to the maximum available under your provider category (currently £6,525 or the equivalent credit-based amount), regardless of the actual fee charged by the institution." On a £41,500 fee, that leaves roughly £35,000 a year to find from elsewhere.

Course Structure

The 4.5-year programme is achieved through year-round study with shorter breaks than standard universities.

Phase 1 (18 months)

Pre-clinical studies covering basic medical sciences and introduction to clinical skills.

Phase 2 (3 years)

Clinical rotations primarily at Milton Keynes University Hospital and partner NHS trusts. All major specialties covered with increasing responsibility.

Special Applicant Categories

International Students

Welcomed

International students pay the same fees as UK students. Buckingham has a significant international student population.

Resits

Accepted

Buckingham is generally more flexible about A-Level resits than many other medical schools.

Graduate Applicants

Accepted

Graduate applicants need a Bachelor degree in a subject cognate to medicine, and must have or be predicted a minimum classification of 2:1 (upper second class).

How to Strengthen Your Application

Applying to medical school requires more than meeting the minimum entry requirements. Here are practical steps to strengthen your application:

  • Prepare for Buckingham's Multiple Mini Assessment (MMA) — Buckingham does not use the UCAT, so stage 2 is its own computer-based test of analysis, interpretation and judgement against Good Medical Practice. If you are also applying to medical schools that do require the UCAT, see the UCAT Preparation Guide for section-by-section strategies, and What Is a Good UCAT Score for Medicine? to understand what you should be aiming for.
  • Gain meaningful work experience — quality of reflection matters more than quantity. The Medicine Work Experience Guide explains what medical schools are looking for.
  • Write a compelling personal statement — avoid the common pitfalls covered in Medicine Personal Statement Guide.
  • Prepare for your interview — whether the format is MMI or panel, thorough preparation is essential. See the MMI and Panel Interview Guide and MMI Interview Format for detailed advice.
  • Choose your four UCAS picks strategically — your university selection should be based on your profile, not prestige alone. The Strategic Application Toolkit can help with this.

Buckingham Medicine FAQ

Does Buckingham require the UCAT?

No. Buckingham does not use the UCAT. Selection runs in three stages: Academic Screening, a computer-based Multiple Mini Assessment (MMA) testing analysis, interpretation and judgement in relation to Good Medical Practice, and then a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI), also called the Objective Structured Selection Examination (OSSE). Exceptionally high performing students may receive an offer after stage 2.

Is a Buckingham medical degree recognised?

Yes. Buckingham has full GMC (General Medical Council) accreditation. Graduates can apply for Foundation Programme places and work as doctors in the UK.

Can I get student loans for Buckingham?

Only a fraction of them. For courses starting on or after 1 January 2027 you apply through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, and Buckingham states that tuition fee loan support is restricted to the maximum for its provider category — currently £6,525 a year — regardless of the fee it actually charges. Against a £41,500 fee that leaves around £35,000 a year to fund privately. Most students require family support or Buckingham's own payment plan.

Is Buckingham easier to get into?

The academic entry requirements are lower (ABB vs AAA), and the school may be more flexible on certain factors. However, competition still exists, and you must demonstrate suitability for medicine.

Why would I choose Buckingham over an NHS-funded place?

Reasons include: the accelerated 4.5-year timeline, smaller cohort sizes, potentially more flexibility on entry if you didn't secure an NHS-funded place, or if you're an international student seeking a UK degree. The financial cost is the main consideration.
